    TOP STORY
Ablation of Fbxw7 Eliminates Leukemia-Initiating Cells by Preventing Quiescence
The authors showed that Fbxw7 plays a pivotal role in maintenance of quiescence in leukemia-initiating cells of chronic myeloid leukemia by reducing the level of c-Myc. [Cancer Cell] Abstract | Graphical Abstract

Regulation of c-Myc Ubiquitination Controls Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia Initiation and Progression
Investigators used chronic myelogenous leukemia as a model of leukemia-initiating cell (LIC)-dependent malignancy and identify the interaction between the ubiquitin ligase Fbw7 and its substrate c-Myc as a regulator of LIC homeostasis. [Cancer Cell] Abstract

Depletion of Jak2V617F MPN-Propagating Stem Cells by Interferon-Alpha in a Murine Model of Polycythemia Vera
Using a murine model of Jak2V617F myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN), researchers investigated the effects of interferon alpha on Jak2V617F MPN-propagating stem cells in vivo. [Blood]

Critical Role of miR-9 in Myelopoiesis and EVI1-Induced Leukemogenesis
Results revealed a unique role of microRNA-9 (miR-9) in myelopoiesis and in the pathogenesis of ecotropic viral integration site 1 (EVI1)-induced myeloid neoplasms and provide insights into the epigenetic regulation of miR9 in tumorigenesis. [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA] Abstract

A Distinct Reactive Oxygen Species Profile Confers Chemoresistance in Glioma-Propagating Cells and Associates with Patient Survival Outcome
Researchers explored the role of elevated O2-:H2O2 ratio as a prosurvival signal in glioma-propagating cells (GPCs). They hypothesized that depleting this ratio sensitizes GPCs to apoptotic triggers. [Antioxid Redox Signal] Abstract

Novel HSP90 Inhibitor NVP-HSP990 Targets Cell Cycle Regulators to Ablate Olig2-Positive Glioma Tumor Initiating Cells
The authors evaluated the effects of a novel HSP90 inhibitor, NVP-HSP990, in glioma tumor initiating cell populations, which are strongly implicated in the root pathobiology of glioblastoma multiforme. [Cancer Res] Abstract

ShRNA Targeting Notch1 Sensitizes Breast Cancer Stem Cell to Paclitaxel
Researchers confirmed that paclitaxel enriched breast cancer stem cells (CSCs) in a dose-dependent manner in MCF-7 human breast cancer cell line. They then demonstrated that Notch1 was overexpressed in breast CSCs isolated from paclitaxel-treated MCF-7 cells compared to non-CSCs. The short hairpin RNA (shRNA) mediated knock-down of Notch1 inhibited MCF-7 cell proliferation and induced cell apoptosis. [Int J Biochem Cell Biol] Abstract

Lin28a Is a Putative Factor in Regulating Cancer Stem Cell-Like Properties in Side Population Cells of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Investigators identified side population cells, which are known to be an enriched population of cancer stem cells, in five oral squamous cell carcinoma cells. [Exp Cell Res] Abstract

Increased In Vivo Angiogenic Effect of Glioma Stromal Mesenchymal Stem-Like Cells on Glioma Cancer Stem Cells from Patients with Glioblastoma
Scientists investigated the biological effects of glioma stromal mesenchymal stem-like cells (GS-MSLCs) on glioma cancer stem cells (gCSCs), testing the hypothesis that GS-MSLCs alter the biological characteristics of gCSCs. [Int J Oncol] Abstract

Association of Gankyrin and Stemness Factor Expression in Human Colorectal Cancer
Researchers investigated the expression of gankyrin and stemness factors in human colorectal adenomas, precancerous lesions, as well as colorectal cancer tissues to assess its involvement in colorectal carcinogenesis. [Dig Dis Sci] Abstract
