Krt19+/Lgr5 Cells Are Radioresistant Cancer-Initiating Stem Cells in the Colon and Intestine
Scientists demonstrated that the intermediate filament keratin-19 (Krt19) marks long-lived, radiation-resistant cells above the crypt base that generate Lgr5 crypt-based columnars in the colon and intestine. In colorectal cancer models, Krt19+ cancer-initiating cells are also radioresistant, while Lgr5 stem cells are radiosensitive. [Cell Stem Cell] Abstract | Graphical Abstract

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
A Novel Monoclonal Antibody against Notch1 Targets Leukemia-Associated Mutant Notch1 and Depletes Therapy Resistant Cancer Stem Cells in Solid Tumors
At relatively high concentrations, the monoclonal antibody (MAb) affected Notch1 signaling in the breast and colon cancer cell lines. The Notch-high cells sorted from solid-tumor cell lines exhibited characteristics of cancer stem cells, which were inhibited by the MAb. [Sci Rep] Full Article

Glioma Initiating Cells Contribute to Malignant Transformation of Host Glial Cells during Tumor Tissue Remodeling via-PDGF Signaling
The interactions between glioma initiating cells (GICs) and host cells in vivo were observed during tissue remodeling processes initiated by human GICs. [Cancer Lett] Abstract

CD15 Expression Does Not Identify a Phenotypically or Genetically Distinct Glioblastoma Population
Scientists demonstrated that CD15-positive (CD15+) cells were less proliferative than their CD15-negative (CD15) counterparts in 10 patient glioblastoma (GB) tumors. They also compared the proliferative activity of CD15+ and CD15 cells in vitro using tumor-initiating primary GB cell lines and found no difference in proliferative behavior. [Stem Cells Transl Med] Abstract

A Versatile Mathematical Work-Flow to Explore How Cancer Stem Cell Fate Influences Tumor Progression
Researchers extended their recent model on cancer stem cell-dynamics creating a new system capable of describing tumor growth during the different stages of cancer progression. [BMC Syst Biol] Full Article

Resveratrol Inhibits the Invasion of Glioblastoma-Initiating Cells via Down-Regulation of the PI3K/Akt/NF-κB Signaling Pathway
Investigators evaluated whether resveratrol (RES) can inhibit glioblastoma-initiating cells (GICs) invasion in vitro and in vivo. They demonstrated that RES suppressed the adhesion, invasion and migration of GICs in vitro and in vivo. [Nutrients] Full Article

Enhancement of SOX-2 Expression and ROS Accumulation by Culture of A172 Glioblastoma Cells under Non-Adherent Culture Conditions
The authors compared the effects of differently textured culture plates and serum deprivation on the acquisition of cancer stem cell properties of A172 glioblastoma cells. [Oncol Rep] Abstract

Differential Expression of Cancer Stem Cell Markers ALDH1 and CD133 in Various Lung Cancer Subtypes
Clinicopathological significance of stem cell markers CD133 and ALDH1 in a large group of lung cancer patients was evaluated. ALDH1 and CD133 had higher expression levels in the NSCLC compared to the SCLC. [Cancer Invest] Abstract

Kruppel-Like Factor 4 Signals through MicroRNA-206 to Promote Tumor Initiation and Cell Survival
Scientists found that both kruppel-like factor 4 and a downstream effector, microRNA-206, are selectively enriched in the mammary cancer stem-like cells (MaCSCs) fractions of cultured human triple negative breast cancer cell lines, as well as in the aldehyde dehydrogenase-high MaCSC sub-population of cells derived from xenografted human mammary carcinomas. REVIEWS
The Role of Glioma Stem Cells in Chemotherapy Resistance and Glioblastoma Multiforme Recurrence
The authors discuss the molecular mechanisms of chemoresistance of glioma stem cells (GSCs) and the reasons why complete eradication of GSCs is so difficult to achieve. They also describe the targeted therapies currently available for GSCs and possible mechanisms to overcome such chemoresistance and avoid therapeutic relapse. [Expert Rev Neurother] Abstract
