    TOP STORY
Interfacial Geometry Dictates Cancer Cell Tumorigenicity
By using engineered extracellular matrices, researchers showed that geometric features at the perimeter of tumor tissue will prime a population of cells with a stem-cell-like phenotype. [Nat Mater] Abstract

CDKN2A-Independent Role of BMI1 in Promoting Growth and Survival of Ph+ Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
BMI1 is a key component of the polycomb repressive complex-1 required for maintenance of normal and cancer stem cells. The authors showed that BMI1 expression is important for proliferation and survival of Ph+ acute lymphoblastic leukemia cells and for leukemogenesis of Ph+ cells in vivo. [Leukemia] Abstract

Circulating Tumor Cells Exhibit Stem Cell Characteristics in an Orthotopic Mouse Model of Colorectal Cancer
The authors aimed to characterize colorectal cancer-derived circulating tumor cells (CTCs) to eventually identify the clinically relevant subfraction of CTCs. [Oncotarget] Full Article

Multifunctional Targeting Vinorelbine plus Tetrandrine Liposomes for Treating Brain Glioma along with Eliminating Glioma Stem Cells
Targeting conjugates of cholesterol polyethylene glycol polyethylenimine and D-a-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate vapreotide were newly synthesized for transporting drugs across the blood-brain barrier and targeting glioma cells and glioma stem cells. [Oncotarget] Full Article

ASC-J9®, and Not Casodex or Enzalutamide, Suppresses Prostate Cancer Stem/Progenitor Cell Invasion via Altering the EZH2-STAT3 Signals
Researchers demonstrated that androgen deprivation therapy with anti-androgens Casodex and Enzalutamide, but not newly identified AR degradation enhancer ASC-J9®, increased prostate cancer (PCa) stem/progenitor population, which might then lead to enhanced PCa cell invasion. [Cancer Lett] Abstract

MicroRNA Profiling of Cisplatin-Resistant Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma Cell Lines Enriched with Cancer-Stem-Cell-Like and Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition-Type Features
Investigators aimed to identify the specific deregulated miRNAs which are responsible for development of resistance phenotype through regulating their resistance related target gene expression in oral squamous cell carcinoma. [Sci Rep] Full Article

Novel PKC-ζ to p47phox Interaction Is Necessary for Transformation from Blebbishields
Scientists demonstrated that a novel PKC-ζ to p47phox interaction is required for reactive oxygen species production in cancer cells. [Sci Rep] Full Article

    CD55 Is a HIF-2α Marker with Anti-Adhesive and Pro-Invading Properties in Neuroblastoma
Scientists revealed that CD55 is a novel target of hypoxia-inducible factor HIF-2α in neuroblastoma (NB) cells. They showed that HIF-2α expression is sufficient to sustain stem-like features of NB cells, whereas CD55 protein upon HIF-2α expression contributes to growth of colonies and to invasion of cells, but not to stemness features. [Oncogenesis] Full Article

Glioma Stem Cells but Not Bulk Glioma Cells Upregulate IL-6 Secretion in Microglia/Brain Macrophages via Toll-Like Receptor 4 Signaling
Researchers explored the interaction between glioma stem cells (GSCs) and microglia/brain macrophages. Using CD133 as a marker of stemness, they enriched for or deprived the mouse glioma cell line GL261 of GSCs by fluorescence-activated cell sorting. [J Neuropathol Exp Neurol] Abstract

Hypoxia Regulates Stemness of Breast Cancer MDA-MB-231 Cells
The investigators cultured MDA-MB-231 cells in a hypoxic gas mixture to simulate the hypoxic environment in tissues and to determine how hypoxia conditions could affect the cell proliferation, apoptosis, cytotoxicity, and colony-forming ability. [Med Oncol] Full Article

    REVIEWS
Adoptive Transfer of Osteoclast-Expanded Natural Killer Cells for Immunotherapy Targeting Cancer Stem-Like Cells in Humanized Mice
The authors present current approaches, advances, and existing limitations in studying interactions of the immune system with the tumor, in particular natural killer cells with cancer stem-like cells, using in vivo preclinical humanized bone marrow, liver, thymus mouse model. [Cancer Immunol Immunother] Abstract

    POLICY NEWS
What New GSK Patent Policy Means for the Developing World
Public-health experts have applauded drug giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) for unveiling new patent policies that could make it easier for people in the world’s poorest countries to access drugs. But they say that other companies will need to follow suit if patients are to see significant improvements in access to medicines — particularly for much-needed cancer drugs. [Nature News] Editorial
