    CDKN2A-Independent Role of BMI1 in Promoting Growth and Survival of Ph+ Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
    BMI1 is a key component of the polycomb repressive complex-1 required for maintenance of normal and cancer stem cells. The authors showed that BMI1 expression is important for proliferation and survival of Ph+ acute lymphoblastic leukemia cells and for leukemogenesis of Ph+ cells in vivo. [Leukemia] Abstract

    Circulating Tumor Cells Exhibit Stem Cell Characteristics in an Orthotopic Mouse Model of Colorectal Cancer

    ASC-J9®, and Not Casodex or Enzalutamide, Suppresses Prostate Cancer Stem/Progenitor Cell Invasion via Altering the EZH2-STAT3 Signals
    Researchers demonstrated that androgen deprivation therapy with anti-androgens Casodex and Enzalutamide, but not newly identified AR degradation enhancer ASC-J9®, increased prostate cancer (PCa) stem/progenitor population, which might then lead to enhanced PCa cell invasion.     MicroRNA Profiling of Cisplatin-Resistant Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma Cell Lines Enriched with Cancer-Stem-Cell-Like and Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition-Type Features

    CD55 Is a HIF-2α Marker with Anti-Adhesive and Pro-Invading Properties in Neuroblastoma
    Scientists revealed that CD55 is a novel target of hypoxia-inducible factor HIF-2α in neuroblastoma (NB) cells. They showed that HIF-2α expression is sufficient to sustain stem-like features of NB cells, whereas CD55 protein upon HIF-2α expression contributes to growth of colonies and to invasion of cells, but not to stemness features.     Glioma Stem Cells but Not Bulk Glioma Cells Upregulate IL-6 Secretion in Microglia/Brain Macrophages via Toll-Like Receptor 4 Signaling
    Researchers explored the interaction between glioma stem cells (GSCs) and microglia/brain macrophages. Using CD133 as a marker of stemness, they enriched for or deprived the mouse glioma cell line GL261 of GSCs by fluorescence-activated cell sorting. [J Neuropathol Exp Neurol] Abstract

    Hypoxia Regulates Stemness of Breast Cancer MDA-MB-231 Cells
    The investigators cultured MDA-MB-231 cells in a hypoxic gas mixture to simulate the hypoxic environment in tissues and to determine how hypoxia conditions could affect the cell proliferation, apoptosis, cytotoxicity, and colony-forming ability. [Med Oncol] Full Article
