Scientists revealed that co-expression of cell surface receptor integrin αvβ3 and transcription factor Slug — a master regulator of a cell’s ability to self-renew and differentiate — identifies rare stem-like cells in patient-derived tumor samples that are associated with metastasis. Researchers report a loss-of-function screen in mice with metastasis as readout and identified OTU domain-containing protein 1 (OTUD1) as a metastasis-repressing factor. OTUD1-silenced cancer cells showed mesenchymal and stem-cell-like characteristics. [Nat Commun]
