PUBLICATIONS(Ranked by impact factor of the journal)Scientists previously reported that culturing umbilical cord blood CD34+ cells in serum‐free media supplemented with valproic acid, a histone deacetylase inhibitor, and a combination of cytokines led to the expansion of the numbers of fully functional hematopoietic stem cells. They used this same approach to expand the numbers of adult human CD34+ cells isolated from mobilized peripheral blood and bone marrow. [Stem Cells Transl Med] Full Article Investigators constructed a dextran sulfate sodium-induced mouse inflammatory bowel disease model and evaluated the effects of treatment with human umbilical cord MSCs. Mouse body weight, fecal traits, colon/spleen gross morphology, tissue histology and immunohistochemical staining, and inflammatory factors were analyzed. [Inflammopharmacology] Abstract Researchers evaluated graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) prophylaxis approaches after umbilical cord blood transplantation (UCBT) by comparing UCBT outcomes with GvHD prophylaxis using tacrolimus plus methylprednisolone to that with Tac plus methotrexate at a single pediatric transplantation center. [Int J Hematol] Abstract Investigators evaluated the efficacy and safety of umbilical cord blood-derived MSCs for the treatment of pediatric patients with severe BK virus-associated late‐onset hemorrhagic cystitis after unrelated cord blood transplantation. [Pediatr Transplant] Abstract The authors demonstrated the changes in superoxide dismutase 2 gene expression, an indicator of oxidative stress, on 3D spheroid MSCs. POLICY NEWSCampus Attacks by Nationalists and Police Alarm India’s Scientific Community The attack on one of India’s most prestigious universities sent shock waves around the country and is the latest sign that the political forces tearing apart Indian society are also affecting the country’s academic community. Students at JNU, a liberal bastion, had been on strike for months against both a major hike in student fees and the government’s controversial Citizenship Amendment Act, widely decried as discriminatory against Muslims. [ScienceInsider] Editorial Moffitt Cancer Center Details Links of Fired Scientists to Chinese Talent Programs Six Florida cancer researchers who were dismissed last month for hiding their ties to a Chinese medical university appear to have been motivated by simple greed and a disregard for both institutional and federal rules.
