Human Multipotent Mesenchymal Stromal Cells from Distinct Sources Show Different In Vivo Potential to Differentiate into Muscle Cells When Injected in Dystrophic Mice
Researchers evaluated if mesenchymal stromal cells from two different sources, umbilical cord tissue and adipose tissue, have the same potential to reach and differentiate in muscle cells in vivo or if this capability is influenced by the niche from where they were obtained. [Stem Cell Rev]

CURRENT PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by Impact Factor of the Journal)

Infusion of HLA-Mismatched Peripheral Blood Stem Cells Improves Outcome of Chemotherapy for Acute Myeloid Leukemia in Elderly Patients
Results indicate that granulocyte colony-stimulating factor-mobilized donor peripheral blood stem cells in combination with conventional chemotherapy may provide a promising treatment modality for acute myeloid leukemia in elderly patients. [Blood]

Functional Recovery in Acute Traumatic Spinal Cord Injury After Transplantation of Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Treatment with human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells can facilitate functional recovery after traumatic spinal cord injury and may prove to be a useful therapeutic strategy to repair the injured spinal cord. [Crit Care Med]

Analysis of the Chondrogenic Potential and Secretome of Mesenchymal Stem Cells Derived from Human Umbilical Cord Stroma
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) from umbilical cord stroma were isolated by plastic adherence and characterized by flow cytometry, looking for cells positive for STRO1, OCT3/4 and SSEA-4 as well as the classic MSC-markers CD44, CD73, CD90, Ki67, CD105 and CD106 and negative for CD34 and CD45. [Stem Cells Dev]

Application of Mesenchymal Stem Cells Derived from Bone Marrow and Umbilical Cord in Human Hair Multiplication
Dermal papilla like tissues (DPLTs) have the same hair bulb structure inductive ability as natural DPLTs in vitro. Transplanted DPLTs can induce new hair follicle in athymic mice. As a result, umbilical cord-mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and bone marrow-MSCs may be an applicable and novel cell source for the generation of human hair cell therapy. [J Dermatol Sci]

Optimization and Scale-Up of Wharton’s Jelly-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells for Clinical Applications
In this study researchers attempted rapid clinical-scale expansion of Wharton’s jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells which would allow these fetus-derived stem cells to be used for various allogeneic cell-based transplantations and tissue engineering. [Stem Cell Res]

The Conundrum of HLA-DRB1*14:01/*14:54 and HLA-DRB3*02:01/*02:02 Mismatches in Unrelated Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation
Findings suggest that disparities at exon 3 of the HLA-DRB1 gene seem unlikely to influence the outcome after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The same may be envisaged for HLA-DRB3*02:01 and *02:02 alleles which, although differing in the Ag binding site, seem unable to modulate an appreciable immune response in an HSCT setting. [Bone Marrow Transplant]

Carbohydrate-Mediated Inhibition of Ice Recrystallization in Cryopreserved Human Umbilical Cord Blood
Results suggest that carbohydrates with potent ice recrystallization inhibition (IRI) increase the yield of non-apoptotic and functional hematopoietic progenitors and provide a foundation for the development of novel synthetic carbohydrates with enhanced IRI properties to improve cryopreservation of umbilical cord blood. [Carbohydr Res]

CXCL8 Enhances the Angiogenic Activity of Umbilical Cord Blood-Derived Outgrowth Endothelial Cells In Vitro
Results demonstrate that CXCL8 stimulates the angiogenic activity of umbilical cord blood-derived outgrowth endothelial cells in vitro. [Cell Biol Int]
