    TOP STORY
Distinct but Phenotypically Heterogeneous Human Cell Populations Produce Rapid Recovery of Platelets and Neutrophils Post-Transplant
Researchers show that human cord blood and mobilized peripheral blood collections contain cells that produce platelets and neutrophils within three-weeks after being transplanted into sublethally irradiated NOD/SCID-IL-2Rγc-null mice. [Blood] Abstract

Tech Bulletin: Expansion Of Hematopoietic Stem And Progenitor Cells

An Acute Negative Bystander Effect of γ-Irradiated Recipients on Transplanted Hematopoietic Stem Cells in Mice
In this study, researchers found that irradiated mouse recipients significantly impaired the long-term repopulating ability of transplanted mouse hematopoietic stem cells shortly after exposure to irradiated hosts and before the cells began to divide. [Blood] Abstract

Endothelial Progenitor Cell Cotransplantation Enhances Islet Engraftment by Rapid Revascularization
Since endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are known to aid neovascularization, investigators aimed to enhance islet engraftment by cotransplanting EPCs with islets. Porcine islets, with or without human cord blood-derived EPCs, were transplanted into diabetic nude mice. [Diabetes] Abstract

Preclinical Safety and Efficacy of Human CD34+ Cells Transduced with Lentiviral Vector for the Treatment of Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome
Researchers evaluated the preclinical safety and efficacy of human CD34+ cells transduced with lentiviral vectors encoding Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein. [Mol Ther] Abstract

Up-Regulation of miR-210 by Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor in Ex Vivo Expanded CD34+ Cells Enhances Cell-Mediated Angiogenesis
Researchers sought to evaluate the role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in expansion and angiogenic function of CD34+ cells and identify specific microRNAs (miRs) associated with angiogenic properties of expanded cells. Umbilical cord blood CD34+ cells were effectively expanded in culture medium containing stem cell factor, Flt-3 ligand, thrombopoietin, and interleukin-6 with and without VEGF. [J Cell Mol Med] Abstract

CD200 Positive Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells Suppress TNF-Alpha Secretion from CD200 Receptor Positive Macrophage-Like Cells
The present study on 20 human mesenchymal stem cells lines shows that the CD200 expression pattern varied from high to medium and low in bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell lines, whereas umbilical cord blood derived mesenchymal stem cells were constantly negative for CD200. [PLoS One] Abstract

Clostridium difficile Infection after Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: Incidence, Risk Factors and Outcome
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence, risk factors and outcome of C. difficile infection after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. [Biol Blood Marrow Transplant] Abstract

Dexamethasone Has Variable Effects on Mesenchymal Stromal Cells
Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) were obtained from human umbilical cord. The surface phenotype and functional characterization of MSC cultured with different concentrations of dexamethasone were investigated, in comparison with a control group, including MSC proliferation, apoptosis, cytokine expression and immunosuppression. [Cytotherapy] Abstract

Senescence of Fetal Endothelial Progenitor Cell in Pregnancy with Idiopathic Fetal Growth Restriction
The aim of this study was to investigate the change of count and the status of cellular senescence in fetal endothelial progenitor cells obtained from the umbilical cord blood of women with fetal growth restriction. [J Matern Fetal Neonatal Med] Abstract
