Human Hematopoietic Stem/Progenitor Cells Overexpressing Smad4 Exhibit Impaired Reconstitution Potential In Vivo
Scientists investigated whether enforced expression of the common-Smad, Smad4, could reveal a role for transforming growth factor-β in human hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells from cord blood. [Blood] Abstract

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)

Meis1 Regulates the Metabolic Phenotype and Oxidant Defense of Hematopoietic Stem Cells
Researchers examined the effect of loss of Meis1 on hematopoietic stem cell function and metabolism. [Blood] Abstract

Adipose Stem Cell-Derived Osteoblasts Sustain the Functionality of Endothelial Progenitors from the Mononuclear Fraction of Umbilical Cord Blood
Results showed how endothelial progenitors present in the mononuclear fraction of umbilical cord blood can be sustained by human adipose-derived stem cell-derived osteoblasts co-culture and contribute to angiogenesis even in an in vivo setting of inflammatory response. [Acta Biomater] Abstract

Paracrine Pro-Angiopoietic Effects of Human Umbilical Cord Blood-Derived Purified CD133+ Cells – Implications for Stem Cell Therapies in Regenerative Medicine
Researchers hypothesized that CD133+ cells secrete several paracrine factors that play a major role in the positive effects observed after treatment and tested supernatants derived from these cells for the presence of such factors. [Stem Cells Dev] Abstract

Exosomes Derived from Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells Alleviate Liver Fibrosis
Results suggested that exosomes derived from human umbilical cord-mesenchymal stem cells could ameliorate CCl4-induced liver fibrosis by inhibiting epithelial-to-mesenchyme transition and protecting hepatocytes. [Stem Cells Dev] Abstract

Reendothelialization of Human Heart Valve Neoscaffolds Using Umbilical Cord-Derived Endothelial Cells
Researchers aimed to develop tissue engineered heart valves combining human umbilical vein endothelial cells and decellularized human heart valve matrices. [Circ J] Abstract | Full Article

Stem Cell Source-Dependent Reconstitution of FOXP3+ T Cells after Pediatric SCT and the Association with Allo-Reactive Disease
Investigators compared CD4+FOXP3+ T-cell reconstitution after unrelated cord blood, matched unrelated donor and matched sibling donor hematopoietic SCT in children, starting as early as one week after transplantation, and analyzed the association with allo-reactive disease. [Bone Marrow Transplant] Abstract

A Tag-Less Method for Direct Isolation of Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells by Gravitational Field-Flow Fractionation
Researchers proposed a new method for an easy, tag-less and direct isolation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells from raw umbilical cord sample based on the gravitational field-flow fractionation. [Anal Bioanal Chem] Abstract

Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells Reduce Systemic Inflammation and Attenuate LPS-Induced Acute Lung Injury in Rats
Scientists investigated whether human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells could ameliorate lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) induced acute lung injury in a rat model. [J Inflamm (Lond)] Abstract | Full Article

    REVIEWS
HHV-6 Encephalitis in Umbilical Cord Blood Transplantation: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6) reactivation and HHV-6 encephalitis seem to occur more frequently in patients undergoing hematopoietic SCT with cord blood as the stem cell source. Researchers conducted a systematic literature review and meta-analysis to investigate the clinical significance of this correlation. [Bone Marrow Transplant] Abstract
