    TOP STORY
Outcome of Patients with Hemoglobinopathies Given Either Cord Blood or Bone Marrow Transplantation from an HLA-Identical Sibling
Investigators analyzed the outcomes of 485 patients with thalassemia major or sickle cell disease receiving HLA-identical sibling cord blood transplantation or bone marrow transplantation. [Blood] Abstract

New StemSpan(TM) SFEM II - for optimal CD34+ cell expansion of bone marrow and cord blood cells

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)

Targeting Natural Killer Cells to Acute Myeloid Leukemia In Vitro with a CD16x33 Bispecific Killer Cell Engager (BiKE) and ADAM17 Inhibition
Scientists determined whether a novel BiKE signaling through CD16 and targeting CD33 could activate natural killer (NK) cells at high potency against acute myeloid leukemia targets. Treatment of NK cells from double umbilical cord blood transplant recipients with the CD16x33 BiKE resulted in activation, especially in those recipients with CMV reactivation. [Clin Cancer Res] Abstract

Canonical Transient Receptor Potential 3 Channel Triggers VEGF-Induced Intracellular Ca2+ Oscillations in Endothelial Progenitor Cells Isolated from Umbilical Cord Blood
Researchers investigated whether the higher proliferative potential of umbilical cord blood-derived endothelial colony forming cells was associated to any difference in the molecular underpinnings of their Ca2+ response to VEGF. [Stem Cell Dev] Abstract

Mesenchymal Stromal Cell Characteristics Vary Depending on Their Origin
Investigators evaluated mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) derived from perinatal tissues umbilical cord and amniotic membrane in comparison to adult MSCs from bone marrow which were used as gold standard. [Stem Cells Dev] Abstract

Successful Short-Term Cryopreservation of Volume-Reduced Cord Blood Units in a Cryogenic Mechanical Freezer: Effects on Cell Recovery, Viability, and Clonogenic Potential
Scientists examined the effects of cryostorage in a mechanical freezer at -150°C on critical quality control variables of cord blood collections to investigate the possible use of mechanical freezers at -150°C as an alternative to storage in liquid- (or vapor-) phase nitrogen. [Transfusion] Abstract

A Synthetic Formulation, Dhanwantharam Kashaya, Delays Senescence in Stem Cells
Investigators evaluated the effects of Dhanwantram kashaya on the proliferation, viability and senescence of human wharton jelly mesenchymal stem cells in vitro. [Cell Prolif] Abstract

Relative Biological Efficiency of Protons at Low and Therapeutic Doses in Induction of 53BP1/γH2AX Foci in Lymphocytes from Umbilical Cord Blood
In order to evaluate DNA damage induced by protons at low and radiotherapeutic doses, lymphocytes from umbilical cord blood of the same four probands were irradiated in the dose range of 1-200 cGy with γ-rays and protons. [Int J Radiat Biol] Abstract

CD271 as a Marker for Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Bone Marrow versus Umbilical Cord Blood
The authors examined the potential application of CD271 as a marker for the isolation of mesenchymal stem cells from umbilical cord blood. [Cells Tissues Organs] Abstract

Growth of Erythroid Cells from Thawed Unseparated Cord Blood In Vitro without Exogenous Erythropoietin
Previous erythroid cell cultures have depended on added serum or erythropoietin. Here, the growth of erythroid cells from thawed unseparated cord blood units in vitro without serum or exogenous erythropoietin is reported. [Transfus Apher Sci] Abstract

    REVIEWS
The Effects of Bortezomib on the Immune System: A Focus on Immune Regulation
This review summarizes the data reported with bortezomib in the prevention of graft-versus-host disease, antibody-mediated graft rejection, anti-angiogenesis, as well as the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and other inflammatory diseases.
