    Mouse Extra-Embryonic Arterial Vessels Harbor Precursors Capable of Maturing into Definitive HSCs
    Investigators showed that umbilical cord and vitelline arteries, but not veins, contain pre-hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) capable of maturing into definitive HSCs in the presence of exogenous IL3, although in fewer numbers than the aorta-gonad-mesonephros region, and that pre-HSC activity in vitelline arteries increases with proximity to the embryo proper. The functional data strongly suggest that extra-embryonic arteries can actively contribute into adult hematopoiesis. [Blood] Abstract

    The Combined Influence of Substrate Elasticity and Surface-Grafted Molecules on the Ex Vivo Expansion of Hematopoietic Stem and Progenitor Cells
    Umbilical cord blood (UCB) is an attractive source of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) for transplantation. However, the low number of HSPCs from a single UCB donor limits the direct transplantation of UCB to patients. Because little is known about the effects of the physical microenvironment on HSPC expansion, researchers investigated the ex vivo expansion of HSPCs cultured on biomaterials with different elasticities and grafted with different nanosegments.     A crucial question in post-ischemic cell therapy refers to the ideal method of cell delivery to the heart. The authors hypothesized that epicardial implantation of subamnion-cord-lining mesenchymal stem cells angiogenic spheroids embedded within fibrin grafts facilitates donor cell survival and enhances cardiac function in failing rat hearts.     Impact of Graft-versus-Host Disease Prophylaxis on Outcomes after Myeloablative Single-Unit Umbilical Cord Blood Transplantation
    Myeloablative single-unit umbilical cord blood transplantation using busulfan, thiotepa, fludarabine and ATG resulted in high rates of engraftment and high anti-tumor activity. Researchers designed a new graft-versus-host disease prophylaxis, substituting long-term steroids by mycophenolate mofetil together with a slight reduction of ATG.
