    TOP STORY
Human Umbilical Cord Blood Mononuclear Cells in a Double-Hit Model of Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia in Neonatal Mice
Researchers investigated the effect of umbilical cord blood mononuclear cells in a new double-hit mouse model of bronchopulmonary dysplasia. [PLoS One] Full Article

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Development of a Xeno-Free Autologous Culture System for Endothelial Progenitor Cells Derived from Human Umbilical Cord Blood
To develop in vitro culture conditions for endothelial progenitor cells derived from human cord blood, investigators isolated extracts and collagen from umbilical cord tissue to replace their animal-derived counterparts. [PLoS One] Full Article

Stem Cell-Like Dog Placenta Cells Afford Neuroprotection against Ischemic Stroke Model via Heat Shock Protein Upregulation
Scientists investigated the dog placenta as a viable source of stem cells for stroke therapy. Immunocytochemical evaluation of phenotypic markers of dog placenta cells (DPCs) cultured in proliferation and differentiation medium revealed that DPCs expressed both stem cell and neural cell markers, respectively. [PLoS One] Full Article

Comparison of Unrelated Cord Blood Transplantation and HLA-Matched Sibling Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation for Patients with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia in Advanced Stage
Investigators present a clinical comparison of unrelated cord blood transplantation and HLA-matched sibling allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for patients with chronic myeloid leukemia in advanced stage (accelerated phase or blast crisis). [Biol Blood Marrow Transplant] Abstract

Risk Factors and Organ Involvement of Chronic GvHD in Japan
Researchers found that unrelated cord blood transplants were associated with a low incidence of extensive chronic GvHD and less frequent involvement of the oral cavity, eye, liver, lung and joints. [Bone Marrow Transpl] Abstract

The Effect of CD137-CD137 Ligand Interaction on Phospholipase C Signaling Pathway in Human Endothelial Cells
Researchers investigated whether CD137-CD137L interaction can stimulate the phospholipase C signaling pathway in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). The diacylglycerol and inositol trisphosphate levels in HUVEC were measured by radioenzymatic assay. [Chem Biol Interact] Abstract

Dielectric Study of the Adhesion of Mesenchymal Stem Cells from Human Umbilical Cord on a Sugarcane Biopolymer
Investigators evaluated the use of electric impedance spectroscopy to follow the adhesion of mesenchymal stem cells from Wharton’s jelly of the human umbilical cord on sugarcane biopolymers. [J Mater Sci Mater Med] Abstract

Culture of Mouse Amniotic Fluid-Derived Cells on Irradiated STO Feeders Results in the Generation of Primitive Endoderm Cell Lines Capable of Self-Renewal In Vitro
To better characterize putative progenitor cell populations present in amniotic fluid (AF), scientists used culture conditions that support self-renewal to determine if these promoted the generation of stable cell lines from AF-derived cells. [Cells Tissues Organs] Abstract

Generation of Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells with High Efficiency from Human Umbilical Cord Blood Mononuclear Cells
Researchers report generation of human induced pluripotent stem cells with great efficiency from umbilical cord blood mononuclear cells using a dox-inducible lentiviral system carrying four Yamanaka factors. [Genomics Proteomics Bioinformatics] Full Article

    REVIEWS
Resilient and Resourceful: Genome Maintenance Strategies in Hematopoietic Stem Cells
The authors present the strategies used by hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) to cope with the many genotoxic insults that they commonly encounter. They briefly describe the DNA-damaging insults that can affect HSC function, and the mechanisms that are employed by HSCs to prevent, survive, and repair DNA lesions. [Exp Hematol] Abstract

    POLICY NEWS
    US Government Shuts Down
The US government entered a state of suspended animation on 1 October after Congress failed to agree on a budget for the next fiscal year, causing federal agencies – including those overseeing science policy and research – to shut down indefinitely. Most government scientists were ordered to stay at home, their offices and labs closed or run by a skeleton staff of ‘essential’ workers. The National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation stopped processing grants, some government websites were made inaccessible and many important research programmes were left hanging, potentially putting lives at risk in the case of some disease studies.
