    TOP STORY
A Novel Mutation in Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome and Successfully Treated with Umbilical Cord Blood Transplantation
Scientists reported a novel mutation in a boy with Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome who was 4 years and 10 months of age and underwent successful umbilical cord blood transplantation. [Blood Cells Mol Dis] Abstract
NEW MesenPureâ„¢: Highly Enriched Mouse MSC Cultures Without the Wait - FREE Sample Request

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Mussel-Inspired Cell-Adhesion Peptide Modification for Enhanced Endothelialization of Decellularized Blood Vessels
Mussel-inspired surface chemistry of polydopamine (pDA) coatings are applied to functionalize decellularized vein matrix (DVM) with extracellular matrix-derived cell adhesion peptides. DVMs engineered with pDA-peptides enhance focal adhesion, metabolic activity, and endothelial differentiation of human endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) derived from cord blood and embryonic stem cells compared with EPCs on non-coated or pDA-coated DVMs. [Macromol Biosci] Abstract

Expression and Function of Endothelial Selectins during Human Development
Scientists studied the functions of endothelial E- and P-selectins and their counter-receptors during human ontogeny. Real-time imaging using in vitro flow chamber assays showed that cord blood mononuclear leukocytes used E-, P- and L-selectin and PSGL-1 to roll on and adhere to endothelium under physiological shear stress. [Immunology] Abstract

Similar Survival, But Better Quality of Life after Myeloablative Transplantation Using Unrelated Cord Blood vs Matched Sibling Donors in Adults with Hematologic Malignancies
Researchers report no significant differences in the cumulative incidence of grades III to IV acute GvHD, relapse rate, or three-year probabilities of disease-free survival between patients receiving umbilical cord blood transplantation (UCBT) and those receiving peripheral blood stem cells alone or combined with bone marrow. However, the cumulative incidence of chronic and extensive chronic GvHD was lower in UCBT recipients. [Bone Marrow Transplant] Abstract

The Clinical and Financial Burden of Pre-Emptive Management of Cytomegalovirus Disease after Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation – Implications for Preventative Treatment Approaches
Investigators compared outcomes and post-transplantation treatment cost in 44 patients who never required pre-emptive cytomegalovirus treatment with 90 treated patients undergoing stem cell transplantation (SCT). Eighty-one subjects received CD34+ selected myeloablative SCT, 12 umbilical cord blood transplants, and 41 T-replete non-myeloablative SCT. [Cytotherapy] Abstract

Neonatal Monocytes Express Antiapoptotic Pattern of Bcl-2 Proteins and Show Diminished Apoptosis Upon Infection with Escherichia coli
Researchers hypothesized that reduced phagocytosis-induced cell death (PICD) in neonatal monocytes is regulated through proteins of the B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) protein family. mRNA and protein expression of Bcl-2 family proteins in cord blood and adult peripheral blood monocytes infected with E. coli were analyzed by quantitative real-time PCR and flow cytometry, cytochrome c release by fluorescence microscopy. [Pediatr Res] Abstract

Enhancement of Mouse Germ Cell-Associated Genes Expression by Injection of Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells into the Testis of Chemical-Induced Azoospermic Mice
Researchers investigated whether injection of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells into the interstitial compartment of the testes promoted spermatogenic regeneration efficiently. [Asian J Androl] Abstract

Osmotic Tolerance Limits of Red Blood Cells from Umbilical Cord Blood
Researchers aimed to characterize the osmotic tolerance limits of cord red blood cells (RBCs) in conditions relevant to cryopreservation, and compare the results to the osmotic tolerance limits of adult RBCs. [Cryobiology] Abstract

Effect of Influenza A Infection on Maturation and Function of Neonatal Monocyte-Derived Dendritic Cells
Scientists investigated the effect of influenza A virus infection on the maturation, apoptosis, and function of monocyte-derived dendritic cells from umbilical cord blood and compared this with responses from adult peripheral blood. [Viral Immunol] Abstract

New Cord Banking Software Solution from STEMSOFT

T-Cell Replete Haploidentical Donor Transplantation Using Post-Transplant CY: An Emerging Standard-of-Care Option for Patients Who Lack an HLA-Identical Sibling Donor
In parallel trials using similar non-myeloablative conditioning regimens, HLA-haploidentical donor transplantation that uses T-cell replete grafts and post-transplant CY produced similar overall survival to double umbilical cord blood transplantation in adult patients, with low rates of TRM, severe acute GvHD and chronic GvHD. [Bone Marrow Transplant] Abstract
