    TOP STORY
Human Endothelial Colony-Forming Cells Serve as Trophic Mediators for Mesenchymal Stem Cell Engraftment via Paracrine Signaling
Investigators used two xenograft models of human mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) transplantation and studied how the presence of endothelial colony-forming cells modulates MSC engraftment and regenerative capacity in vivo. [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA] Abstract

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Prevention of Rejection of Allogeneic Endothelial Cells in a Biohybrid Lung by Silencing HLA-Class I Expression
The capacity of Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) class I-silenced human cord blood derived endothelial cells to abrogate allogeneic immune responses, their functional properties and suitability for endothelialization of poly-4-methyl-1-pentene membranes were investigated. [Biomaterials] Abstract

Engraftment Kinetics and Graft Failure after Single Umbilical Cord Blood Transplantation Using Myeloablative Conditioning Regimen
Investigators analyzed engraftment kinetics and outcomes of 1268 patients (73% children) with acute leukemia (64% acute lymphoblastic leukemia, 36% acute myeloid leukemia) in remission who received single-unit umbilical cord blood transplantation after myeloablative conditioning regimen. [Haematologica]

IL-4 and IL-13 Differentially Regulate TLR-Induced Eosinophil-Basophil Differentiation of Cord Blood CD34+ Progenitor Cells
Cord blood CD34+ cells from healthy donors were cultured with IL-4 or IL-13 (in combination with lipopolysaccharide) and assessed for eosinophil-basophil differentiation using methylcellulose cultures and flow cytometry for related intracellular signalling pathways. [PLoS One] Full Article

Cord Blood Transplantation Is Associated with Rapid B-Cell Neogenesis Compared with BM Transplantation
The authors retrospectively analyzed T-cell receptor excision circles as well as signal and coding joint kappa-deleting recombination excision circles as markers of newly produced lymphocytes in 133 patients. Compared with BM and peripheral blood, their data suggested that cord blood provided rapid B-cell recovery. [Bone Marrow Transplant] Abstract

Differential Effects of Mycophenolate Mofetil and Cyclosporine A on Peripheral Blood and Cord Blood Natural Killer Cells Activated with Interleukin-2
Investigators examined if the sensitivity of umbilical cord blood natural killer cells to mycophenolate mofetil and/or cyclosporine differs from their adult counterparts. [Cytotherapy] Abstract

Performance Evaluation of Sysmex XN Hematology Analyzer in Umbilical Cord Blood: A Comparison Study with Sysmex XE-2100
The Sysmex XN modular system is a new automated hematology analyzer equipped with different principles from its previous version, Sysmex XE-2100. Researchers compared the performances of Sysmex XN and XE-2100 in umbilical cord blood specimens. [Clin Chem Lab Med] Abstract

Comprehensive Characterization of Four Different Populations of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells as Regards Their Immune Properties, Proliferation and Differentiation
Scientists compared mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from four different sources, human bone marrow, adipose tissue, umbilical cord Wharton’s Jelly and the placenta, in order to determine which population of MSCs displayed the most prominent immunosuppressive effects on phytohemagglutinin-induced T cell proliferation, and which one had the highest proliferative and differentiation potential.
