    TOP STORY
ADAMTS9-Mediated Extracellular Matrix Dynamics Regulates Umbilical Cord Vascular Smooth Muscle Differentiation and Rotation
Researchers showed the secreted metalloprotease ADAMTS9 is necessary for murine umbilical cord vascular development. Restricting it to the cell surface using a gene trap allele, Adamts9Gt, impaired umbilical vessel elongation and radial growth via reduced versican proteolysis and accumulation of extracellular matrix [Cell Rep] Full Article | Graphical Abstract

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Minimal Residual Disease Analysis by Eight-Color Flow Cytometry in Relapsed Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
Investigators addressed evaluation of minimal residual disease by flow cytometry in the clinical trial for childhood relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukemia using an eight-color flow cytometry. [Haematologica]

Differentiation of Wharton’s Jelly-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells into Motor Neuron-Like Cells on Three-Dimensional Collagen-Grafted Nanofibers
Scientists investigated the effect of the nanoscaffolds on mesenchymal stem cells from Wharton’s jelly differentiation into motor neuronal lineages in the presence of retinoic acid and sonic hedgehog. [Mol Neurobiol] Abstract

Conditioned Media from Human Umbilical Cord Blood-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Inhibits Melanogenesis by Promoting Proteasomal Degradation of MITF
Scientists showed that conditioned media derived from human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells inhibited melanogenesis by regulating microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) expression via the ERK signaling pathway. [PLoS One] Full Article

Integration of Humoral and Cellular HLA-Specific Immune Responses in Cord Blood Allograft Rejection
The authors analyzed a case of cord blood allograft rejection in which donor-specific anti-HLA Abs and cytotoxic T lymphocyte cytotoxic specific for donor HLA-B*54:01 were detected at the time of graft rejection. [Bone Marrow Transplant] Abstract

Chondrogenic Differentiation of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells Results in Substantial Changes of Ecto-Nucleotides Metabolism
Researchers described substantial changes of ecto-nucleotides metabolism and ecto-enzymes expression profiles resulting from chondrogenic differentiation of human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells. [J Cell Biochem] Abstract

Comparative Analysis of Neural Differentiation Potential in Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells Derived from Chorion and Adult Bone Marrow
Investigators isolated and cultured chorion mesenchymal stem cells and compared their proliferative capacity, multipotency, and neural differentiation ability with bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells. [Cell Tissue Res] Abstract

Cartilage Repair by Human Umbilical Cord Blood-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells with Different Hydrogels in a Rat Model
The authors assessed the feasibility of human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUCB-MSCs) in articular cartilage repair and to further determine a suitable delivering hydrogel in a rat model. The hUCB-MSCs with hydrogel composites resulted in a better repair as seen by gross and histological evaluation compared with hydrogels without hUCB-MSCs. [J Orthop Res] Abstract

Early and Progressive Insulin Resistance in Young, Non-Obese Cancer Survivors Treated with Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation
In a single-center, prospective, descriptive, cross-sectional study, the authors studied 45 survivors of hematological malignancies treated with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation before the age of 18 years and 90 matched healthy controls. They collected clinical, imaging, and laboratory data including oral glucose tolerance test. [Pediatr Blood Cancer] Abstract

SmartDishâ„¢ with STEMgridâ„¢-6 for Accurate Counting of Hematopoietic CFU Assays

    REVIEWS
Umbilical Cord Blood Donation: Public or Private?
The authors review the progress of umbilical cord blood (UCB) banking technology; they also analyze the current data on pediatric and adult unrelated UCB, including the recent expansion of interest in transplantation for hemoglobinopathies, and discuss emerging studies on the use of autologous UCB for neurologic diseases and regenerative medicine. [Bone Marrow Transplant] Abstract
