    TOP STORY
Umbilical Cells Help Eye’s Neurons Connect
Cells isolated from human umbilical cord tissue have been shown to produce molecules that help retinal neurons from the eyes of rats grow, connect and survive. [Press release from Duke University discussing online prepublication in The Journal of Neuroscience] Press Release | Abstract

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
RNA-Based, Transient Modulation of Gene Expression in Human Hematopoietic Stem and Progenitor Cells
Researchers aimed at exploring new ways to transiently modify hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell gene expression using non-integrating, RNA-based molecules. [Sci Rep] Full Article

Efficient Gene Delivery to Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells by Cationized Porphyra yezoensis Polysaccharide Nanoparticles
This study centered on an innovative application of Porphyra yezoensis polysaccharide with cationic modification as a safe and efficient nonviral gene vector to deliver a plasmid encoding human Wnt3a into human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells. [Int J Nanomedicine] Abstract

Immunomodulation of Endothelial Differentiated Mesenchymal Stromal Cells: Impact on T and NK Cells
The authors determined the impact of differentiation toward endothelial cells on immunoregulation by Wharton’s jelly mesenchymal stromal cells. [Immunol Cell Biol] Abstract

Secretome Profiling of Cytokines and Growth Factors Reveals that Neuro-Glial Differentiation Is Associated with the Down-Regulation of Chemokine Ligand 2 (MCP-1/CCL2) in Amniotic Fluid Derived-Mesenchymal Progenitor Cells
Researchers used the newly characterized human amniotic fluid derived-mesenchymal progenitor MePR-2B cell line differentiated to a neuro-glial phenotype and exploited the very high sensitivity and versatility of magnetic beads-based immunoassays. [Proteomics] Abstract

The Effect of Fibroblast Growth Factor on Distinct Differentiation Potential of Cord Blood-Derived Unrestricted Somatic Stem Cells and Wharton’s Jelly-Derived Mesenchymal Stem/Stromal Cells
Investigators compared the basic characteristics of unrestricted somatic stem cells isolated from cord blood and mesenchymal stem/stromal cells isolated from Wharton’s jelly of umbilical cords. They also evaluated the effect of basic fibroblast growth factor supplementation on the growth and differentiation of these cells. [Cytotherapy] Abstract

Cord Blood Banking and Quality Issues
Scientists applied the cell therapy quality system to all cord blood units shipped into the cellular therapy laboratory for transplant between 2011 and 2013. The quality issues were categorized as likely, potentially, or unlikely to have a clinical impact. [Transfusion] Abstract

Mesenchymal Stem Cell Conditioned Medium Promotes Proliferation and Migration of Alveolar Epithelial Cells under Septic Conditions In Vitro via the JNK-P38 Signaling Pathway
Researchers investigated the impact of human umbilical cord Wharton’s jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cell secreted factors on alveolar epithelial cells under septic conditions and determined the relevant intracellular signaling pathways. [Cell Physiol Biochem] Full Article

Allogeneic Transplantation for CML in the TKI Era: Striking the Right Balance
The majority of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) patients treated with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) achieve excellent responses with sustained treatment; however, for an almost equal number of patients, an adequate response cannot be achieved with any of the currently available TKIs. For those patients who fail to respond adequately to TKIs, hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation offers the best prospect of long-term survival. [Nat Rev Clin Oncol] Abstract
