    TOP STORY
Low Oxygen Tension Modulates the Insulin-Like Growth Factor -1 or -2 Signaling via Both Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 Receptor and Insulin Receptor to Maintain Stem Cell Identity in Placental Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Scientists hypothesized that insulin like growth factors (IGF)-1 and IGF-2 signal via distinct signaling pathways under low oxygen tension to maintain placental mesenchymal stem cells multipotency. [Endocrinology]

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Endothelium-Targeted Human Delta-Like 1 Enhances the Regeneration and Homing of Human Cord Blood Stem and Progenitor Cells
Investigators produced an endothelium-targeted soluble Notch ligand, the delta-serrate-lag-2 domain of human delta-like 1 fused with a RGD motif, and tested the effects of this protein on human umbilical cord blood hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells ex vivo and in vivo. [J Transl Med] Abstract

Adverse Reactions during Stem Cell Infusion in Children Treated with Autologous and Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation
Researchers retrospectively studied pediatric patients undergoing autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation to determine the incidence and grade of adverse reactions during stem cell infusion and their predictors. [Bone Marrow Transplant] Abstract

In Vitro and In Vivo Evaluation of Cord Blood Hematopoietic Stem and Progenitor Cells Amplified with Glycosaminoglycan Mimetic
Umbilical cord blood CD34+ cells were expanded with serum-free medium, SCF, TPO, FLT3-lig and G-CSF during 12 days in the absence or the presence of increasing OTR4131 concentrations. Proliferation ratio, cell viability and phenotype, functional assays, migration capacity and NOD-scid/γc-/- mice engraftment were assessed after expansion. [Stem Cell Res Ther] Full Article

Biological Impact of Xeno-Free Chemically Defined Cryopreservation Medium on Amniotic Epithelial Cells
Xeno-free cryopreservation of human amnion-derived stem cells was feasible and can be standardized to establish a bio-bank with human amnion-derived stem cells for future clinical application. [Stem Cell Res Ther] Full Article

Stem Cells in Aggregate Form to Enhance Chondrogenesis in Hydrogels
Scientists compared the influence of cell phenotype, aggregate size, and aggregate number on chondrogenic differentiation in a generic hydrogel platform. Despite being differing cell sources, both rat bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell and human umbilical cord Wharton’s jelly cell aggregates were consistent in outperforming cell suspension control groups in biosynthesis and chondrogenesis. [PLoS One] Full Article

The Protective Effect of Human Umbilical Cord Blood CD34+ Cells and Estradiol against Focal Cerebral Ischemia in Female Ovariectomized Rat: Cerebral MR Imaging and Immunohistochemical Study
Scientists investigated whether the protective effect of CD34+ cells against ischemic injury can be reinforced with complemental estradiol treatment in female ovariectomized rat and its possible mechanism. [PLoS One] Full Article

Heat Shock Protein 60 Affects Behavioral Improvement in a Rat Model of Parkinson’s Disease Grafted with Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Derived Dopaminergic-Like Neurons
Researchers demonstrated that human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs)-based cell transplantation is potential therapeutic treatment for Parkinson’s disease (PD), and hUC-MSCs-derived DAergic-like neurons appear to be favorable candidates for cell replacement therapy in PD. [Neurochem Res] Abstract
