    TOP STORY
Cord Blood Monocyte–Derived Inflammatory Cytokines Suppress IL-2 and Induce Nonclassic “TH2-Type” Immunity Associated with Development of Food Allergy
In a general population-derived birth cohort, scientists found that in infants who developed food allergy, cord blood displayed a higher monocyte to CD4+ T cell ratio and a lower proportion of natural regulatory T cell in relation to duration of labor. [Sci Transl Med] Abstract | Press Release

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Analysis of Non-Relapse Mortality and Causes of Death over 15 Years following Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation
Investigators performed a retrospective single-center study to assess changes in outcomes after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and causes of non-relapse mortality over three five year periods. [Bone Marrow Transplant] Abstract

A Phase I Study of Reduced Intensity Conditioning and Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation followed by Dose Escalation of Targeted Consolidation Immunotherapy with Gemtuzumab Ozogamicin in Children and Adolescents with CD33+ Acute Myeloid Leukemia
Researchers examined the feasibility and toxicity of reduced-intensity conditioning-allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant followed by gemtuzumab ozogamicin targeted immunotherapy in children with CD33+ acute myeloid leukemia in first complete remission/second complete remission. [Biol Blood Marrow Transplant] Abstract

Effects of Gestational Magnetic Resonance Imaging on Methylation Status of Leptin Promoter in the Placenta and Cord Blood
The authors investigated DNA methylation patterns of leptin promoter in the placenta and cord blood of women exposed to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) during gestation. Results showed that average methylation levels of leptin in the placenta and cord blood were not affected by MRI. [PLoS One] Full Article

ESAM Is a Novel Human Hematopoietic Stem Cell Marker Associated with a Subset of Human Leukemias
Researchers found that endothelial cell-selective adhesion molecule (ESAM) can be used to purify human hematopoietic stem cells from all the currently available sources (adult bone marrow, mobilized peripheral blood, and cord blood). [Exp Hematol] Abstract

Clinical and Laboratory Outcomes after Umbilical Cord Blood Transplantation in a Patient with Mucolipidosis II Alpha/Beta
A 26-month-old girl received a human leukocyte antigen 3/6-allele-matched transplant from cord blood. Comparing before and after cord blood transplantation results, scientists observed that lysosomal enzyme activities in the plasma decreased by approximately 20-40%. [Am J Med Genet A] Abstract

Apelin: An Endogenous Peptide Essential for Cardiomyogenic Differentiation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells via Activating Extracellular Signal-Regulated Kinase 1/2 and 5
Researchers investigated the role of apelin in the cardiomyogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells derived from Wharton’s jelly of human umbilical cord in vitro. [Cell Biol Int] Abstract

Post-Test Probability for Neonatal Hyperbilirubinemia Based on Umbilical Cord Blood Bilirubin, Direct Antiglobulin Test, and ABO Compatibility Results
The authors investigated the predictive value of umbilical cord blood (UCB) testing for significant hyperbilirubinemia. Neonatal UCB bilirubin, UCB direct antiglobulin test, and blood group were determined, as well as the maternal blood group and the red blood cell antibody status. [Eur J Pediatr] Abstract

    REVIEWS
Cord Blood Transplant for Acute Myeloid Leukemia
The authors review controversial issues, including the use of double versus single cord blood units for transplantation, optimal cord blood unit selection, infection prophylaxis, conditioning regimens and graft versus host disease prophylaxis. [Br J Haematol] Abstract
