TOP STORYCaloric Restriction Promotes Structural and Metabolic Changes in the Skin The authors showed that caloric restriction (CR) mice display fur coat remodeling associated with an expansion of the hair follicle stem cell pool. They also found that the dermal adipocyte depot is underdeveloped in CR animals. [Cell Rep] Full Article | Graphical Abstract | Press Release

PUBLICATIONS(Ranked by impact factor of the journal)DERMAL STEM CELLS & TISSUE REGENERATIONUltraviolet-B (UVB)-induced apoptotic keratinocytes were increased in Langerhans cell (LC)-depleted mice. Scientists revealed that UVB-induced apoptotic keratinocytes were phagocytosed by LCs ex vivo and that prolongation of UVB-induced cutaneous inflammation following treatment with Cytochalasin D, an inhibitor of phagocytosis, was partially attenuated in LC-depleted mice. [J Immunol] Abstract MAD2B Acts as a Negative Regulatory Partner of TCF4 on Proliferation in Human Dermal Papilla Cells Overexpression of MAD2B inhibited dermal papilla cell (DPC) aggregative growth and proliferation induced by the Wnt signaling activator T cell factor 4 (TCF4), and decreased TCF4-induced expression and the release of hair growth-related cytokines, including hepatocyte growth factor, insulin-like growth factor-1, and vascular endothelial growth factor in DPCs. [Sci Rep] Full Article Researchers studied the interaction between five different volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at doses mimicking chronic low level environmental exposure and the effect on human keratinocytes to get better insight into VOC-cell interactions. [Sci Rep] Full Article The Role of Focal Adhesion Kinase in Keratinocyte Fibrogenic Gene Expression The authors investigated the importance of keratinocyte focal adhesion kinase (FAK) at the single cell level in key fibrogenic pathways critical for scar formation. Keratinocytes were isolated from wildtype and keratinocyte-specific FAK-deleted mice, cultured, and sorted into single cells. [Int J Mol Sci] Full Article SKIN CANCERS & DISORDERSResearchers found several miRNAs with ‘stage specific’ alterations while others display a clear ‘gradual’, either progressive increase or decrease in expression along the malignant evolution of keratinocytes. The observed alterations focused in miRNAs involved in the regulation of AKT/mTOR or in those involved in epithelial to mesenchymal transition. [Oncogene] Abstract Scientists explored the carcinogenic role of thyroid hormone receptor interactor 4 (TRIP4) in melanoma. The high expression of TRIP4 was observed in human melanoma cells and tissues. Its knockdown suppressed melanoma progression in vitro and in vivo, including melanoma cell proliferation, migration and invasion inhibition, and apoptosis induction. [J Invest Dermatol] Abstract Investigators evaluated the effects of miR-136 on the proliferation, apoptosis, and epithelial–mesenchymal transition of melanoma cells by targeting premelanosome protein (PMEL) through the Wnt signaling pathway. [Biosci Rep] Full Article The authors provide information about three-dimensional (3D) melanoma cell migration, proliferation and invasion in a 3D melanoma skin equivalent (MSE) model. They pay careful attention to compare the structure of the tissues in the MSE with similarly-prepared 3D human skin equivalent models. [PeerJ] Full Article
