PUBLICATIONS(Ranked by impact factor of the journal)Researchers determined the role of reactive oxygen species produced by NADPH oxidase 2 (Nox2) in the endothelial-lineage specification of mouse induced-pluripotent stem cells (miPSCs). When wild-type (WT) and Nox2-knockout (Nox2−/−) miPSCs were differentiated into endothelial cells, the expression of endothelial markers, arterial endothelial markers, pro-angiogenic cytokines, and Notch pathway components was suppressed in the Nox2−/− cells but increased in both WT and Nox2−/− miPSCs when Nox2 expression was upregulated. [Sci Rep] Full Article DOT1L Promotes Angiogenesis through Cooperative Regulation of VEGFR2 with ETS-1 Scientists demonstrated that silencing of DOT1L in human umbilical vein endothelial cells leads to decreased cell viability, migration, tube formation, and capillary sprout formation in vitro, as well as reduced formation of functional vascular networks in matrigel plugs in vivo. [Oncotarget] Full Article Epidermal Growth Factor Prevents Oligomeric Amyloid-β Induced Angiogenesis Deficits In Vitro Investigators determined the effect of oligomeric amyloid-β42 on angiogenesis in vitro, utilizing single brain endothelial cell cultures and triple cultures mimicking the microvascular unit. [J Cereb Blood Flow Metab] Abstract Impaired Development and Dysfunction of Endothelial Progenitor Cells in Type 2 Diabetic Mice Researchers elucidated the development and mechanical dysfunction of endothelial progenitor cells in type 2 diabetes. [Diabetes Metab] Abstract Scientists showed that exposure of vascular endothelial EA.hy926 cells to CsA induced phosphorylation of Src/vascular endothelial cadherin (VE-cadherin) and translocation of VE-cadherin from cell surface to cytoplasm, resulting in an increase in vascular permeability. [Bone Marrow Transplant] Abstract The authors examined the anti-angiogenic activities of peptides derived from kringle 2 domain of tissue-type plasminogen activator to identify the functional core sequence. Seven peptides were constructed from the kringle 2 sequence, based on the structure and characteristics of amino acid residues, and were analyzed for their inhibitory effects on endothelial cells. [J Cell Biochem] Abstract Expression profiles of microRNAs (miRs) in curcumin-treated human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were investigated by miR microassay. Specific mimics and inhibitors of miR-1275 or miR-1246 were transfected into HUVECs. [Cell Prolif] Abstract The expression of miR-582, miR-195 and miR-532 under hypoxic or normoxic conditions was measured using quantitative real-time PCR analysis and the results showed that the increased fold of miR-195 was highest in human endothelial progenitor cells under hypoxic conditions. REVIEWSLimb Ischemia and Vessel Regeneration: Is There a Role for VEGF? Taking into account numerous experimental and clinical data demonstrating rather insufficient therapeutic potential of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), the authors called into question the role of this protein in limb ischemia and vessel regeneration. They also summarize several aspects which can influence VEGF expression and its measurement in the ischemic tissues. POLICY NEWSNIH Aims to Beef Up Clinical Trial Design as Part of New Data Sharing Rules Drug companies and academic researchers will have to step up their public reporting of clinical trial results under new federal policies. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) also laid out a new plan for submitting clinical trial proposals that aims to beef up the rigor of the studies. [Science Insider] Editorial Europe Proposes Copyright Reform to Help Scientists Mine Research Papers The European Commission has announced long-awaited plans to make it easier for researchers to harvest facts and data from research papers — by freeing the computer-aided activity from the shackles of copyright law. [Nature News] Editorial Illusory Fears Must Not Stifle Chimera Research After more than a decade of controversy, the United States is nudging towards approving research on human–animal embryos. The National Institutes of Health closed a month-long public consultation on ‘chimera research’, and is widely expected to lift a moratorium that forbids federal funding for such work. [Nature News] Editorial Report Urges Trump, Clinton to Make Room for Science in the White House A new report on how the next U.S. president should manage the nation’s science portfolio comes with an invisible sticker on its cover: Open and read immediately if Donald Trump is elected. [Science Insider] Editorial A Shady Market in Scientific Papers Mars Iran’s Rise in Science Iran’s parliament, the Majlis, is expected to take up work on a bill that would outlaw shady practices in scientific publishing.
