TOP STORYScientists investigated the role of SENP1-mediated SUMOylation in graft arteriosclerosis, the major cause of allograft failure. They observed an endothelial-specific induction of SENP1 and GATA2 in clinical graft rejection specimens that show endothelial activation-mediated vascular remodelling. [Nat Commun] Full Article | |

PUBLICATIONS(Ranked by impact factor of the journal)Researchers investigated the response sensitivities of metastatic breast cancer cells to microRNA-7 (miR-7) and the roles of miR-7 in the interaction of endothelial cells and metastatic cancer cells. [Br J Cancer] Abstract A PPARγ-Dependent miR-424/503-CD40 Axis Regulates Inflammation Mediated Angiogenesis Investigators report a novel microRNA mediated suppression of endothelial CD40 expression. They found that CD40 is closely regulated by miR-424 and miR-503, which directly target its 3′ untranslated region. [Sci Rep] Full Article The Zebrafish Ventricle: A Hub of Cardiac Endothelial Cells for In Vitro Cell Behavior Studies The authors investigated and compared the distribution of cardiac endothelial cells (cECs) in adult mouse and zebrafish ventricles. Isolated cECs maintained a high proliferation index even after three passages and were amenable to pharmacological treatments to study cEC migration in vitro. [Sci Rep] Full Article Human umbilical vein endothelial cells cultured in conditioned media derived from recombinant human high-mobility group box-1 (HMGB1)-treated or HMGB1-TF gastric cancer cells showed remarkably enhanced migration and tube formation activities. These effects were abrogated by anti-HMGB1 antibody or HMGB1 siRNA in both N87 and KATOIII cells. [Cancer Sci] Full Article Primary endothelial progenitor cells from Sprague-Dawley rats were harvested and treated with α-tocopherol (α-T) and α-tocopherol phosphate (α-TP) for 24 hours. α-T and α-TP attenuated high glucose/hypoxia-induced cell apoptosis by promoting Bcl-2 and Akt and inhibiting nuclear factor κB p65, JNK, Notch-1, and p38MAPK genes. [J Vasc Surg] Abstract MiR-377 Regulates Inflammation and Angiogenesis in Rats after Cerebral Ischemic Injury Primary rat microglial cells and brain microvascular endothelial cells were exposed to oxygen-glucose deprivation. The concentrations of cytokines in the culture medium were measured by specific ELISA. Tube formation assay was for the in vitro study of angiogenesis. [J Cell Biochem] Abstract The impact of adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCS) and umbilical cord-MSCs on the immunogenicity of endothelial progenitor cells was analyzed by the mixed lymphocyte reaction and cytokine secretion in vitro and was further tested by allogenic peripheral blood mononuclear cell induced immuno-rejection on a cell/matrigel graft in an SCID mouse model. [PLoS One] Full Article Scientists screened the expression profiles and investigated the physiological role of circular RNAs (circRNAs) in hypoxia-induced human umbilical vein endothelial cells. Using circRNA microarray analysis, they identified 36 circRNAs that were significantly dysregulated including 14 down-regulated circRNAs and 22 up-regulated with 2-fold change. [Biochem Biophys Res Commun] Abstract Compliant Substratum Guides Endothelial Commitment from Human Pluripotent Stem Cells Investigators used polydimethylsiloxane—a transparent, biocompatible elastomeric material—as a substrate to study endothelial cell commitment of human induced pluripotent stem cells using a stepwise differentiation scheme. REVIEWSThis systematic review emphasizes the growing evidence that systemic sclerosis (SSc) is primarily a vascular disease where endothelial cell (EC) dysfunction is present and prominent in different aspects of cell survival (activation and apoptosis), angiogenesis and vasculogenesis and where disturbed interactions between ECs and various other cells contribute to SSc vasculopathy. POLICY NEWSTrials of Embryonic Stem Cells to Launch in China The experiments will also represent the first clinical trials of embryonic stem cells under regulations that China adopted in 2015, in an attempt to ensure the ethical and safe use of stem cells in the clinic. [Nature News] Editorial Pay-to-View Blacklist of Predatory Journals Set to Launch Scholarly-services firm Cabell’s International says that it will launch its own list of predatory journals: those that deceive their authors or readers, for example by charging fees to publish papers without conducting peer review. [Nature News] Editorial Web of Science Owner Buys up Booming Peer-Review Platform The owner of the vast science-citation database Web of Science — Clarivate Analytics — is buying up a firm that has gathered hundreds of thousands of peer-review records, in a deal that could lead to new ways of organizing scientific peer review and preventing peer-review fraud.
