    SCIENCE NEWS

Applying Stem Cell Technology to Liver Diseases
Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells) hold promise for cell replacement therapy and modeling human disease. Two independent research groups — at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, and the University of California San Francisco — have now shown that both possibilities are true for iPS cell-derived liver cells. [Press release from EurekAlert! discussing online prepublication in the Journal of Clinical Investigation]

Results suggest that neuronal precursor cell proliferation and differentiation are differentially regulated by the Jak pathway. [Stem Cells]

Gli1 is an Inducing Factor in Generating Floor Plate Progenitor Cells From Human Embryonic Stem Cells
Researchers show that forced expression of the transcription factor GLI1 in human embryonic stem cells at the earliest stage of neural induction, resulted in their commitment to floor plate lineage. [Stem Cells]

A Role for Regulatory T Cells in Acceptance of Embryonic Stem Cell-Derived Tissues Transplanted Across an MHC Barrier
Spontaneous acceptance of embryonic stem cell-derived tissues mimics the acquired immune privilege induced by co-receptor blockade and is determined by regulatory T cell-mediated suppression. [Stem Cells]

MicroRNA-1 Regulates Smooth Muscle Cell Differentiation by Repressing KLF4
Researchers sought to uncover novel targets of and shed light on the function of miR-1 in the context of embryonic stem cell differentiation of smooth muscle cells in vitro. [Stem Cells Dev]

Fetal Stromal Niches Enhance Human Embryonic Stem Cell-Derived Hematopoietic Differentiation and Globin Switch
Researchers investigated the effects of primary stromal cells from fetal hematopoietic niches and their conditioned media, applied singly or in sequential orders, on induction of human embryonic stem cells, H1, H9 and H14 lines, to hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells. [Stem Cells Dev]

Modulated Differentiation of Embryonic Stem Cells into Hepatocyte-Like Cells by Coculture with Hepatic Stellate Cells
Hepatic stellate cells have contrasting effects on embryoid bodies undergoing differentiation and undifferentiated embryonic stem cells, i.e., positive and negative modulation, respectively. [J Biosci Bioeng]
