Spontaneous Irs1 Passenger Mutation Linked to a Gene-Targeted SerpinB2 Allele
Spontaneous mutations arising during embryonic stem cell culture may be a frequent but underappreciated occurrence. When linked to a targeted allele, such mutations could lead to incorrect assignment of phenotype and may account for a subset of markedly discordant results from experiments independently targeting the same gene. [Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A]

CURRENT PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by Impact Factor of the Journal)

Ontogeny-Recapitulating Generation and Tissue Integration of ES Cell-Derived Purkinje Cells
Researchers found that Purkinje cells could be robustly generated from mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells by recapitulating the self-inductive signaling microenvironments of the isthmic organizer. [Nat Neurosci]

Rare Cell Proteomic Reactor Applied to SILAC Based Quantitative Proteomic Study of Human Embryonic Stem Cell Differentiation
A fully-integrated proteomics sample processing and analysis platform, termed rare cell proteomic reactor, was developed for large-scale quantitative proteomic analysis of human embryonic stem cells with approximately 50,000 cells. [Mol Cell Proteomics]

Using Growth Factor Arrays and Micropatterned Co-Cultures to Induce Hepatic Differentiation of Embryonic Stem Cells
Instead of supplementing culture media with soluble growth factors (GFs), researchers investigated cultivation and differentiation of mouse embryonic stem cells on printed arrays of GFs. [Biomaterials]

Differential Roles of Sall4 Isoforms in Embryonic Stem Cell Pluripotency
By genome wide location analysis researchers have determined that Sall4a and Sall4b have overlapping, but not identical binding sites within the embryonic stem cell genome. [Mol Cell Biol]

Human Embryonic Stem Cells and Metastatic Colorectal Cancer Cells Shared the Common Endogenous Human MicroRNA-26b
Microarrays were used to analyze the global expression of miRNAs in a human embryonic stem cell line (i.e. HUES-17) and four colorectal cancer cell lines (i.e. LoVo, SW480, HT29 and Caco-2) with different metastatic potentialities. [J Cell Mol Med]

Gingival Fibroblasts as a Promising Source of Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells
Results suggest that gingival fibroblasts from the easily obtainable gingival tissues can be readily reprogrammed into induced pluripotent stem cells, thus making them a promising cell source for investigating the basis of cellular reprogramming and pluripotency for future clinical applications. [PLoS One]

Pro-Arrhythmic Risk of Embryonic Stem Cell-Derived Cardiomyocytes Transplantation in Infarcted Myocardium
Results demonstrate that transplantation of un-differentiated embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and ESC derived-cardiomyocytes provide similar improvement in cardiac function post-myocardial infarction. [Heart Rhythm]

PDCD2 Is Essential for Inner Cell Mass Development and Embryonic Stem Cell Maintenance
Results indicate that in vivo, PDCD2 is critical for blastomere and embryonic stem cell maintenance by contributing to the regulation of genes in a manner essential to the undifferentiated state of these cells. [Dev Biol]

Undifferentiated Propagation of the Human Embryonic Stem Cell Lines, H1 and HSF6, on Human Placenta-Derived Feeder Cells Without Basic Fibroblast Growth Factor Supplementation
Findings may support the hypothesis that human placenta-derived feeder cells (HPCs) enhance endogenous basic fibroblast growth factor production and activation of the ERK1/2-c-Fos/c-Jun pathway, which suggests that HPCs have an additional advantage in their human embryonic stem cell propagation compared with mouse embryonic fibroblast.
