    TOP STORY

Scientists Home In on Chemicals Needed to Reprogram Cells
Scientists have made a significant leap forward in the drive to find a way to safely reprogram mature human cells and turn them into stem cells, which can then change into other cell types, such as nerve, heart, and liver cells. [Press release from The Scripps Research Institute discussing online prepublication in Cell Stem Cell]

CURRENT PUBLICATIONS  (Ranked by Impact Factor of the Journal)

Reprogramming of Human Primary Somatic Cells by OCT4 and Chemical Compounds
Researchers report a small molecule cocktail that enables reprogramming of human primary somatic cells to induced pluripotent stem cells with exogenous expression of only OCT4. [Cell Stem Cell]

MicroRNA Profiling Reveals Two Distinct p53-Related Human Pluripotent Stem Cell States
Researchers profiled miRNA expression levels across 49 human cell lines, including embryonic stem cells (ESCs), induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), differentiated cells, and cancer cell lines. They found that the resulting miRNA profiles divided the iPSCs and human ESCs examined into two distinct categories irrespective of the cell line origin. [Cell Stem Cell]

A Mesoderm-Derived Precursor for Mesenchymal Stem and Endothelial Cells
Using human embryonic stem cells directed toward mesendodermal differentiation, researchers show that mesenchymal stem/stromal cells originate from a population of mesodermal cells identified by expression of apelin receptor. [Cell Stem Cell]

A Cyclic AMP Analog, 8-Br-cAMP, Enhances the Induction of Pluripotency in Human Fibroblast Cells
Researchers demonstrate that 8-Bromoadenosine 3′, 5′-cyclic monophosphate improves the reprogramming efficiency of human neonatal foreskin fibroblast cells transduced with the four transcription factors by two-fold. [Stem Cell Rev]

Murine Embryonic Stem Cells Self Renewal and Pluripotency Is Maintained by a Bovine Granulosa Cell Line Conditioned Medium While Increasing the Proliferation Rate
Researchers studied the effects of the conditioned medium from a bovine granulosa cell line (BGC-CM), on the maintenance of self renewal and pluripotency of murine embryonic stem cells (mESCs). They found that this medium is able to maintain mESC self renewal while preserving its critical properties without leukemia inhibitory factor addition. [Stem Cells Dev]

Human Germ Cell Differentiation from Fetal- and Adult-Derived Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells
Researchers compared the potential of human induced pluripotent stem cells, derived from adult and fetal somatic cells, to form primordial and meiotic germ cells, relative to human embryonic stem cells. [Hum Mol Genet]

Successful Differentiation to T Cells, But Unsuccessful B-Cell Generation, from B-Cell-Derived Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells
Forced expression of certain transcription factors in somatic cells results in generation of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, which differentiate into various cell types. Researchers investigated T-cell and B-cell lineage differentiation from iPS cells in vitro. [Int Immunol]

Generation of Viable Male and Female Mice from Two Fathers
Researchers used pluripotent stem cells derived from somatic cells to combine the haploid genomes from two males to produce viable sons and daughters. [Biol Reprod]

There Is More to a Lipid Than Just Being a Fat: Sphingolipid-Guided Differentiation of Oligodendroglial Lineage from Embryonic Stem Cells
Research showed for the first time that the composition of glycosphingolipids is tightly regulated during embryo development. The new studies suggest that ceramide and its derivative, sphingosine-1-phosphate, act synergistically on embryonic stem cell differentiation. [Neurochem Res]
