    Researchers describe a strategy to genetically modify human induced pluripotent stem cells at ‘safe harbor’ sites in the genome, which fulfill five criteria based on their position relative to contiguous coding genes, microRNAs and ultraconserved regions. [Nat Biotechnol]

    Tracking and Assessing the Rise of State-Funded Stem Cell Research
    In the eight-year period preceding the most recent NIH guidelines, only a small number of cell lines could be studied with federal funds. During this time, six states — California, Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey and New York — took on a role typically played by the NIH and created funding programs specifically designed to support stem cell research, including human embryonic stem cell research.     Influencing Hematopoietic Differentiation of Mouse Embryonic Stem Cells Using Soluble Heparin and Heparan Sulfate Saccharides
    Embryonic stem cells (ESCs) derived from Ext1-/- embryos are unable to differentiate into hematopoietic lineages, instead retaining ESC marker expression throughout embryoid body culture. However hematopoietic differentiation can be restored by the addition of soluble heparin. [J Biol Chem]
