    TOP STORY
Researchers Show How Embryonic Stem Cells Orchestrate Human Development
Researchers have shown in detail how three genes within human embryonic stem cells regulate development, a finding that increases understanding of how to grow these cells for therapeutic purposes. [Press release from Yale University discussing online prepublication in Cell Stem Cell] Press Release | Abstract

Induce Neural Progenitor Cells Faster and More Effectively - Watch New Technical Video

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by Impact Factor of the Journal)

Efficient Derivation of Purified Lung and Thyroid Progenitors from Embryonic Stem Cells
Researchers demonstrated the purification and directed differentiation of primordial lung and thyroid progenitors derived from mouse embryonic stem cells. [Cell Stem Cell] Abstract | Press Release

Self-Renewing Endodermal Progenitor Lines Generated from Human Pluripotent Stem Cells
Researchers established endodermal progenitor cell lines from human embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells. [Cell Stem Cell] Abstract | Press Release

Derivation of iPSCs in Stirred Suspension Bioreactors
Researchers report fast and efficient derivation of mouse induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) in stirred suspension bioreactors, with and without the use of c-Myc. [Nat Methods] Abstract

Nanotopography Influences Adhesion, Spreading, and Self-Renewal of Human Embryonic Stem Cells
Researchers’ results demonstrated that nanotopography could provide a potent regulatory signal over different human embryonic stem cell behaviors, including cell morphology, adhesion, proliferation, clonal expansion, and self-renewal. [ACS Nano] Abstract

SCL/T-Cell Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia 1 Regulates Hematopoietic Specification from Human Embryonic Stem Cells
Investigators found that enforced expression of stem cell leukemia (SCL) in human embryonic stem cells accelerates the emergence of hematoendothelial progenitors and robustly promotes subsequent differentiation into primitive and total blood cells with higher clonogenic potential. [Mol Ther] Abstract

Survival, Migration and Differentiation of Mouse Tau-GFP Embryonic Stem Cells Transplanted into the Rat Auditory Nerve
Scientists transplanted tau-green fluorescent protein (GFP) mouse embryonic stem cells into the auditory nerve either by the internal auditory meatus or via the modiolus in rats that had been previously deafened by application of β-bungarotoxin to the round window niche. [Exp Neurol] Abstract

Neurons Derived from Human Embryonic Stem Cells Extend Long-Distance Axonal Projections through Growth Along Host White Matter Tracts after Intra-Cerebral Transplantation
Researchers have utilized the human embryonic stem (ES) cell line Envy, which constitutively expresses green fluorescent protein, in order to study the in vivo properties of neurons derived from human ES cells. [Front Cell Neurosci] Abstract

Pilot Study of Induced Pluripotent Stem-Derived Neural Cells to Examine Biologic Effects of Alcohol on Human Neurons In Vitro
Researchers used new technologies to reprogram human subject-specific tissue into pluripotent cell colonies and generate human neural cultures as a model system to examine the molecular actions of alcohol. [Alcohol Clin Exp Res] Abstract

    POLICY NEWS

Bigger-Than-Expected Budget Cuts Hit Spanish Scientists
Spanish scientists’ hopes that the long-delayed 2012 national budget would spare their research funding were quashed as the government announced a 25% funding cut compared to last year. [Spanish Government, Spain] Press Release

Cyprus Institute Loses Money and Support
Once billed as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) of the Middle East, the Cyprus Institute in Nicosia is now so deep in crisis that it has not been able to pay last month’s salaries. The Cypriot parliament is withholding the institute’s 2012 budget amid a storm of criticism from an audit exposing poor financial management to complaints about the management style of the institute’s president. [Cypriot Parliament, Cyprus] Press Release
