    SCIENCE NEWS

Novel Molecular Pathway Regulates Invasive Growth and Metastasis in Estrogen Receptor-Positive Breast Cancer
The investigators demonstrated that over-expression of Rab27B in non-invasive breast cancer cell lines promoted cell cycle progression, proliferation and invasiveness of breast cancer cells in vitro . Mass spectrometry identified HSP90-alpha, a chaperone molecule, as a key pro-invasive growth regulator that was secreted in a Rab27B-dependent fashion into the micro-environment and was required for the activation of matrix metallo proteinase-2. [Press release from ScienceDaily discussing online prepublication in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute]

    Growing Cells Without Scaffolds
Cell sheet technology is an alternative, scaffold-free tissue-engineering strategy, which aims at sheet-like cell aggregation with cell-to-cell connections and with an extracellular matrix while eliminating the disadvantages of scaffold materials. [Press release from Materials Views discussing online prepublication in Macromolecular Bioscience]

Living, Breathing Human Lung-on-a-Chip: A Potential Drug-Testing Alternative
Researchers have created a device that mimics a living, breathing human lung on a microchip. [Press release from the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University discussing online prepublication in Science]

CURRENT PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by Impact Factor of the Journal)

Reconstituting Organ-Level Lung Functions on a Chip
Researchers describe a biomimetic microsystem that reconstitutes the critical functional alveolar-capillary interface of the human lung. [Science]

Effect of the Secretory Small GTPase Rab27B on Breast Cancer Growth, Invasion, and Metastasis
Secretory GTPases like Rab27B control vesicle exocytosis and deliver critical proinvasive growth regulators into the tumor microenvironment. The expression and role of Rab27B in breast cancer were unknown. [J Natl Cancer Inst]

Alpha2Beta1 Integrin Controls Association of Rac with the Membrane and Triggers Quiescence of Endothelial Cells
Here, researchers show that alpha2beta1 integrin, when ligated to the basement membrane component laminin-1, triggers a proliferation arrest in primary endothelial cells. [J Cell Sci]

Matrix Metalloproteinase 2 (MMP-2) Degrades Soluble Vasculotropic Amyloid-Beta E22Q and L34V Mutants Delaying Their Toxicity for Human Brain Microvascular Endothelial Cells
The results indicate that endogenous MMP-2 release and activation resulting from amyloid challenge differentially degrades amyloid-beta species, delaying their toxicity for endothelial cells. [J Biol Chem]

Interaction Between Electrical Stimulation, Protein Coating and Matrix Elasticity: a Complex Effect on Muscle Fibre Maturation
Previously, researchers showed the effects of matrix stiffness and protein coating on proliferation and differentiation of muscle progenitor cells in a two-dimensional (2D) situation. In the present study, researchers have investigated the additional effect of electrical stimulation. [J Tissue Eng Regen Med]

Carrier-Free Epithelial Cell Sheets Prepared by Enzymatic Degradation of Collagen Gel
In this study, researchers developed a novel method for preparing carrier-free epithelial cell sheets, which have potential for use in repairing defects of the ocular surface. [J Tissue Eng Regen Med]

A Simple Method for Cell Sheet Fabrication Using Mica Surfaces Grafted with Peptide Detergent A6K
Cell sheet technology is a very important strategy for scaffold-free tissue engineering. In order to fabricate cell sheets by a simple method, peptide detergent A6K was grafted on mica surfaces by dropping its aqueous solution at different concentrations on the surface. [Macromol Biosci]

Influence of Acellular Natural Lung Matrix on Murine Embryonic Stem Cell Differentiation and Tissue Formation
Findings support the utility of acellular lung as a matrix for engineering lung tissue and highlight the critical role played by matrix or scaffold-associated cues in guiding embryonic stem cell differentiation toward lung-specific lineages. [Tissue Eng Part A]
