    TOP STORY
The Predominant Role of Collagen in the Nucleation, Growth, Structure and Orientation of Bone Apatite
Scientists showed that type I collagen in vitro can initiate and orientate the growth of carbonated apatite mineral in the absence of any other vertebrate extracellular matrix molecules of calcifying tissues. They also showed that the collagen matrix influences the structural characteristics on the atomic scale, and controls the size and the three-dimensional distribution of apatite at larger length scales. [Nat Mater] Abstract

[New Webinar] Discover How to Reduce Variability in Primary Neuron Cultures with NeuroCult SM

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)

Heparan Sulfate, an Endogenous TLR4 Agonist, Promotes Acute Graft-versus-Host Disease following Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation
Researchers showed that heparan sulfate (HS), an extracellular matrix component, can activate Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) on dendritic cells (DCs) in vitro, leading to the enhancement of DC maturation and alloreactive T cell responses. [Blood] Abstract

Transcriptomes of Germinal Zones of Human and Mouse Fetal Neocortex Suggest a Role of Extracellular Matrix in Progenitor Self-Renewal
Data suggest that cell adhesion and cell-extracellular matrix interactions promote the proliferation and self-renewal of neural progenitors in the developing human neocortex. [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA] Abstract

Enhanced Function of Pancreatic Islets Co-Encapsulated with ECM Proteins and Mesenchymal Stromal Cells in a Silk Hydrogel
Investigators demonstrated that encapsulation in silk with both mesenchymal stem cells and extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins enhances islet function and with further development may have potential as a suitable platform for islet delivery in vivo. [Biomaterials] Abstract

Enhanced Radiosensitivity of Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma Cells by β1 Integrin Inhibition
Integrin-mediated adhesion to extracellular matrix contributes to the regulation of the cellular radiation response in various tumor entities. To evaluate whether targeting of β1 integrin enhances the radiosensitivity of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, cell lines were assessed using either inhibitory anti-β1 integrin antibodies or specific β1 integrin small interfering RNA. [Radiother Oncol] Abstract

Injectable Extracellular Matrix Derived Hydrogel Provides a Platform for Enhanced Retention and Delivery of a Heparin-Binding Growth Factor
Scientists introduce the potential for using a decellularized extracellular matrix-derived hydrogel for the improved delivery of heparin-binding growth factors. [Acta Biomater] Abstract

A Novel Culture Device for the Evaluation of Three-Dimensional Extracellular Matrix Materials
Researchers developed a novel extracellular matrix (ECM) evaluation culture device that allows for precisely defined surface-seeding of three-dimensional ECM scaffolds, irrespective of their natural geometry. [J Tissue Eng Regen Med] Abstract

Comprehensive Characterization of Chondrocyte Cultures in Plasma and Whole Blood Biomatrices for Cartilage Tissue Engineering
Investigators showed that chondrocyte cultivation in allogeneic plasma and whole-blood matrices promoted sufficient chondrocyte viability and differentiation behavior, resulting in neo-formation of a hyaline-like cartilage matrix. [J Tissue Eng Regen Med] Abstract

Collagen-IV Induces Embryoid Bodies Formation and Differentiation from Buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) Embryonic Stem Cells
A novel method using three dimensional extracellular matrices for in vitro generation of embryoid bodies from buffalo embryonic stem cells and its differentiation potential by teratoma formation was successfully established. [Biochem Biophys Res Commun] Abstract

    INDUSTRY NEWS

    Massachusetts Stem-Cell Bank to Close
A Massachusetts stem-cell bank will close when it runs out of public funding this year. The University of Massachusetts Stem Cell Bank opened in 2008 with US$8.6 million in public funds in response to federal funding limitations on human embryonic stem-cell lines. [NatureNews] Press Release

UCLA School of Dentistry Gets $5 Million from NIH to Train Future Leaders in Oral Health Research
Trainees accepted into the programs will be mentored by current University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Dentistry faculty members in four areas in which the school has centers of excellence: oral cancer and cancer biology; bone biology and bioengineering; microbiology and immunology; and stem cell and regenerative medicine.
