    TOP STORY
A Hydrogel Derived from Decellularized Dermal Extracellular Matrix
Scientists suggested that extracellular matrix hydrogel properties can be varied and partially controlled by the scaffold tissue source, and that these properties can markedly affect cell behavior. [Biomaterials] Abstract

Convergence of Physical and Chemical Signaling in the Modulation of Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Cycle and Proliferation by Fibrillar Collagen-Regulated P66Shc
The results demonstrate that fibrillar collagen-regulated p66Shc converges the physical and chemical stimuli to modulate smooth muscle cell cycle and proliferation through phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase-mediated Akt and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase and their opposite regulation in downstream common cell cycle signaling cascades. [Biomaterials] Abstract

Integrin ß1 Is Required for Maintenance of Vascular Tone in Postnatal Mice
Researchers showed that adult mice containing a fibroblast/smooth muscle cell-specific deletion of integrin ß1 exhibit impaired bleeding time and maintenance of vessel architecture, including progressively reduced levels of extracellular matrix. [J Cell Commun Signal] Abstract

Sulfated Hyaluronan/Collagen I-Matrices Enhance Osteogenic Differentiation of Human Mesenchymal Stromal Cells In Vitro Even in the Absence of Dexamethasone
Artificial extracellular matrices consisting of collagen I and different glycosaminoglycan derivatives were used as a substrate for human mesenchymal stromal cells to study osteogenic differentiation in vitro. [Acta Biomater] Abstract

Cell Adhesion-Dependent Serine 85 Phosphorylation of Paxillin Modulates Focal Adhesion Formation and Haptotactic Migration via an Association with the C-Terminal Tail Domain of Talin
Scientists suggested that cell adhesion-dependent paxillin phosphorylation at Ser85 is important for its interaction with talin and regulation of dynamic focal adhesions and cell migration. [J Biol Chem]

Hemicentin2 and Fibulin1 Are Required for Epidermal-Dermal Junction Formation and Fin Mesenchymal Cell Migration during Zebrafish Development
Researchers provided first insights into the role of hemicentin 2 during vertebrate development, identifying it as an evolutionary conserved protein that acts in functional redundancy with fibulin 1C (fbln1C) and/or fibulin1D isoforms to regulate tissue adhesion and cell migration, while extending current knowledge of the functions of vertebrate Fbln1. [Dev Biol] Abstract

Inflammation Modulates Expression of Laminin in the Central Nervous System following Ischemic Injury
Scientists report that transient extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling takes place early after stroke and suggest that this increase in ECM protein expression may constitute an effort to revascularize and oxygenate the tissue. [J Neuroinflammation] Abstract | Full Article

Human Fibroblast Matrices Bio-Assembled Under Macromolecular Crowding Support Stable Propagation of Human Embryonic Stem Cells
Investigators used dextran sulfate 500 kDa as a macromolecular crowder to induce WI-38 fetal human lung fibroblasts at 0.5% serum condition to deposit human extracellular matrix in three days. [J Tissue Eng Regen Med] Abstract

Inhibition of Hepatic Stellate Cell Activation and Liver Fibrosis by Fat-Specific Protein 27
In vivo data showed that ectopic expression of fat-specific protein 27 protein significantly reduced levels of hydroxyproline in liver tissue, and decreased serum levels of collagen III and hyaluronic acid, which in turn, suppressed liver fibrosis in rats. [Mol Cell Biochem] Abstract
