    TOP STORY
Synergistic Effects of SDF-1α Chemokine and Hyaluronic Acid Release from Degradable Hydrogels on Directing Bone Marrow Derived Cell Homing to the Myocardium
To enhance the engraftment of circulating bone marrow derived cells in the myocardium following myocardial infarction, researchers developed in situ forming hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogels with degradable crosslinks to sustain the release of recombinant stromal cell-derived factor-1 alpha (SDF-1α) and HA to the injured myocardium. [Biomaterials] Abstract

Molecular Crowding of Collagen: A Pathway to Produce Highly-Organized Collagenous Structures
Scientists report on a simple, fast, cell-free method capable of producing highly-organized, anistropic collagen fibrillar lamellae de novo, which persist over relatively long-distances. [Biomaterials] Abstract

Increased Tenascin C And Toll-Like Receptor 4 Levels in Visceral Adipose Tissue as a Link between Inflammation and Extracellular Matrix Remodeling in Obesity
Researchers suggest that tenascin C is involved in the etiopathology of obesity via visceral adipose tissue inflammation representing a link with extracellular matrix remodeling. [J Clin Endocrinol Metab] Abstract

ECM Stiffness Primes the TGFß Pathway to Promote Chondrocyte Differentiation
Researchers investigated mechanisms by which chondrocytes generate an integrated response to extracellular matrix (ECM) stiffness and TGFß, a potent agonist of chondrocyte differentiation. [Mol Biol Cell] Abstract

A Naturally-Derived Cardiac Extracellular Matrix Enhances Cardiac Progenitor Cell Behavior In Vitro
Researchers determined whether a naturally-derived cardiac extracellular matrix could enhance cardiac progenitor cell function in vitro. [Acta Biomater] Abstract

Contact Sensitizers Induce Skin Inflammation via Reactive Oxygen Species Production and Hyaluronic Acid Degradation
Scientists identified an indirect mechanism of contact sensitizer induced innate inflammatory signaling involving the breakdown of the extracellular matrix and generation of endogenous danger signals. [PLoS One] Full Article

Real-Time Monitoring of Adherence of Streptococcus anginosus Group Bacteria to Extracellular Matrix Decorin and Biglycan Proteoglycans in Biofilm Formation
Results suggest that Streptococcus anginosus groups bind to the extracellular matrix proteoglycans decorin and biglycan, with interaction mediated by the conjugated glycosaminoglycan chain. [Res Microbiol] Abstract

Extracellular Signal-Regulated Kinase Plays a Proapoptotic Role in Podocytes after Reactive Oxygen Species Treatment and Inhibition of Integrin-Extracellular Matrix Interaction
Researchers demonstrated that reactive oxygen species and blocking integrin-extracellular matrix interaction induce podocyte apoptosis, which is mediated by extracellular signal-regulated kinase activation. [Exp Biol Med] Abstract

Shedding of Kidney Injury Molecule-1 by Membrane-Type 1 Matrix Metalloproteinase
Results suggest that kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) negatively regulates cellular function mediated through interaction with collagen, and membrane-type 1 matrix metalloproteinase abrogates it through the cleavage and shedding of KIM-1. [J Biochem] Abstract
