    TOP STORY
Mechanical Force Regulates Integrin Turnover in Drosophila In Vivo
Researchers suggest that integrin-extracellular matrix adhesive stability is continuously controlled by force in vivo through integrin-dependent auto-regulatory feedback mechanisms so that tissues can quickly adapt to and withstand mechanical stresses. [Nat Cell Biol] Abstract

Air-Liquid Interface Culture for Respiratory Research: Watch Q&A Video

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)

A Candida albicans Biofilm-Induced Pathway for Matrix Glucan Delivery: Implications for Drug Resistance
Scientists identified three glucan modification enzymes that function to deliver glucan from the cell to the extracellular matrix. They showed that the enzymes are crucial for both delivery of β-1,3 glucan to the biofilm matrix and for accumulation of mature matrix biomass. [PLoS Pathog] Full Article

Hyaluronic Acid-Human Blood Hydrogels for Stem Cell Transplantation
Researchers aimed to develop and characterize a naturally-derived, autologous, biodegradable hydrogel in order to improve acute stem cell retention in the myocardium. [Biomaterials] Abstract

Light Activated Cell Migration in Synthetic Extracellular Matrices
Scientists demonstrated a strategy for manipulating individual mammalian stem cells in defined synthetic hydrogels through selective optical activation of Rac, an intracellular signaling protein that plays a key role in cell migration. [Biomaterials] Abstract

Modeling In Vivo Skeletal Muscle Aging In Vitro Using Three-Dimensional Bioengineered Constructs
Researchers suggest that three-dimensional bioengineered skeletal muscle constructs represent an in vitro model of the in vivo cell niche with multiple population doubled constructs displaying similar characteristics to aging/atrophied muscle in vivo. [Aging Cell] Abstract

A Novel Mutation in β Integrin Reveals an Integrin-Mediated Interaction between the Extracellular Matrix and cki-1/p27KIP1
Scientists demonstrated that the β integrin PAT-3 regulates the localization and expression of cyclin dependent kinase inhibitor 1 (CKI-1). [PLoS One] Full Article

Nanopatterned Cardiac Cell Patches Promote Stem Cell Niche Formation and Myocardial Regeneration
Researchers combined autologous cardiosphere-derived cells with nanotopographically defined hydrogels mimicking the native myocardial matrix, to form in vitro cardiac stem cell niches, and control cell function and fate. [Integr Biol] Abstract

Full-Thickness Skin Wound Healing Using Human Placenta-Derived Extracellular Matrix Containing Bioactive Molecules
Results suggested that human placenta-derived extracellular matrix sheets provide microenvironment favorable to the growth and differentiation of cells, and positive modulate the healing of full-thickness wounds. [Tissue Eng Part A] Abstract

Biodegradable Scaffold Fabricated of Electrospun Albumin Fibers: Mechanical and Biological Characterization
Scientists presented a fibrous scaffold comprised solely of albumin. The scaffold was fabricated using the electrospinning method, and resulted in micro-scale fibers that demonstrated mechanical properties similar to those of elastin fibers, a common component of connective tissue extracellular matrix. [Tissue Eng Part C Methods] Abstract
