| TOP STORY | Cochlin Produced by Follicular Dendritic Cells Promotes Antibacterial Innate Immunity Investigators report that cochlin is specifically expressed by follicular dendritic cells and selectively localized in the fine extracellular network of conduits in the spleen and lymph nodes. During inflammation, cochlin was cleaved by aggrecanases and secreted into blood circulation. In models of lung infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, Coch-/- mice showed reduced survival linked to defects in local cytokine production, recruitment of immune effector cells, and bacterial clearance. By producing cochlin, follicular dendritic cells thus contribute to the innate immune response in defense against bacteria. [Immunity] Full Article | Graphical Abstract |
| PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal) | Extracellular Matrix Metalloproteinase Inducer Shows Active Perivascular Cuffs in Multiple Sclerosis Scientists investigated whether the expression of extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer varies with the temporal evolution of lesions in murine experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, whether it was uniformly upregulated across multiple sclerosis specimens, and whether it was a feature of inflammatory perivascular cuffs in multiple sclerosis lesions. [Brain] Abstract Combination Therapy of Human Adipose-Derived Stem Cells and Basic Fibroblast Growth Factor Hydrogel in Muscle Regeneration Investigators determined whether combination therapy using human adipose-derived stem cells and basic fibroblast growth factor incorporated into hydrogel could enhance muscle regeneration in a muscle laceration animal model. [Biomaterials] Abstract Interleukin-13 Induces Collagen Type-1 Expression through Matrix Metalloproteinase-2 and Transforming Growth Factor-β1 in Airway Fibroblasts in Asthma Investigators hypothesized that interleukin-13 stimulates collagen type-1 production by the airway fibroblast in a matrix metalloproteinase- and transforming growth factor-β1-dependent manner in human asthma as compared to healthy controls. [Eur Respir J] Abstract Molecular Composition of Extracellular Matrix in the Vestibular Nuclei of the Rat By using histochemical and immunohistochemical methods, scientists provide a detailed map of the distribution of extracellular matrix (ECM) molecules in the vestibular nuclear complex (VNC) of the rat. They observed common characteristics of the ECM staining pattern in the VNC and a number of differences among the individual vestibular nuclei and their subdivisions. [Brain Struct Funct] Abstract Texas Three-Step Decellularization Protocol: Looking at the Cardiac Extracellular Matrix Researchers describe testing of a series of protocols that enabled us to develop a novel optimized strategy for the enrichment and solubilization of extracellular matrix (ECM) components. Following tissue decellularization, they used acid extraction and enzymatic deglycosylation to facilitate re-solubilization. The end result is the generation of three fractions for each sample: soluble components, cellular components, and an insoluble ECM fraction. [J Proteomics] Abstract Human Breast Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts Enhance Cancer Cell Proliferation through Increased TGF-α Cleavage by ADAM17 The authors demonstrated increased expression of ADAM17 protein in cancer-associated fibroblasts extracted from human breast carcinomas compared with donor-matched normal fibroblasts, and TGF-α secretion positively correlates with ADAM17 expression in these cells. [Cancer Lett] Abstract Age-Related Bone Deterioration Is Diminished by Disrupted Collagen Sensing in Integrin α2β1 Deficient Mice Scientists showed for the first time that integrin α2 deficiency is linked to collagen type I expression in bone. Investigating the femurs of wild type and integrin α2β1 deficient mice, they found that loss of integrin α2 results in altered bone properties. [Bone] Abstract Human Amniotic Fluid- and Dental Pulp-Derived Stem Cells Seeded into Collagen Scaffold Repair Critical Size Bone Defects Promoting Vascularization Researchers evaluated potential human stem cells, such as dental pulp stem cells and amniotic fluid stem cells, combined with collagen scaffold, to reconstruct critical size cranial bone defects in animal model. [Stem Cell Res Ther] Abstract | Full Article Novel Biomimetic Hydroxyapatite/Alginate Nanocomposite Fibrous Scaffolds for Bone Tissue Regeneration Hydroxyapatite/alginate nanocomposite fibrous scaffolds were fabricated via electrospinning and a novel in situ synthesis of hydroxyapatite that mimics mineralized collagen fibrils in bone tissue.
