    TOP STORY
In Vivo Esophageal Regeneration in a Human Being by Use of a Non-Biological Scaffold and Extracellular Matrix
Scientists used readily available stents and extracellular matrix to regenerate the esophagus in vivo in a human being to re-establish swallowing function. [Lancet] Abstract | Press Release | Video

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
Flow Induced Crystallization of Collagen: A Potentially Critical Mechanism in Early Tissue Formation
The authors present a simple fiber drawing experiment, which demonstrates that slightly concentrated type I collagen monomers can be “flow-crystallized” to form highly-oriented, continuous, hierarchical fibers at cell-achievable strain rates and physiologically relevant concentrations. [ACS Nano] Abstract

In Situ Regeneration of Bioactive Coatings Enabled by an Evolved Staphylococcus aureus Sortase A
Researchers demonstrated the capacity to repeatedly regenerate a covalently immobilized monomolecular thin film of bioactive molecules through a two-step stripping and recharging cycle. Laboratory evolved S. aureus sortase A transpeptidation facilitated surface re-engineering of medical devices in situ after in vivo implantation through removal and restoration film constituents. Morphogenesis of 3D Vascular Networks Is Regulated by Tensile Forces
Scientists assessed the effect of uniaxial cell-induced and externally applied tensile forces on the morphology of vascular networks formed within fibroblast and endothelial cell-embedded 3D polymeric constructs. [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA] Abstract | Press Release

Matrix Metalloproteinase-10 Regulates Stemness of Ovarian Cancer Stem-Like Cells by Activation of Canonical Wnt Signaling and Can Be a Target of Chemotherapy-Resistant Ovarian Cancer
Scientists identified matrix metalloproteinase-10 (MMP10) is expressed in cancer stem-like cells/cancer-initiating cells of epithelial ovarian cancer. An immunohistochemical study revealed that a high expression level of MMP10 is a marker for poor prognosis and platinum resistance in multivariate analysis. [Oncotarget] Full Article

Scaffold-Free Scleraxis-Programmed Tendon Progenitors Aid in Significantly Enhanced Repair of Full-Size Achilles Tendon Rupture
Investigators compared, by in-depth histomorphometric evaluation, the regenerative potential of uncommitted human mesenchymal stem cells and Scleraxis-programmed tendon progenitors in the healing of a full-size of rat Achilles tendon defect. [Nanomedicine] Abstract

Bioactive Anti-Thrombotic Modification of Decellularized Matrix for Vascular Applications
Small intestinal submucosa was modified with the endothelial cell membrane protein thrombomodulin and the glycosaminoglycan heparin to facilitate protein C activation and anticoagulant activity, respectively. [Adv Healthc Mater] Abstract

Bioprinting Organotypic Hydrogels with Improved Mesenchymal Stem Cell Remodeling and Mineralization Properties for Bone Tissue Engineering
Scientists investigated the effect of the incorporation of collagen type I in 3D-bioprinted polysaccharide-based hydrogels to the modulation of cell morphology, osteogenic remodeling potential, and mineralization. [Adv Healthc Mater] Abstract

Biomimetic Polymers for Cardiac Tissue Engineering
Researchers developed an injectable biomimetic reverse thermal gel (RTG) specifically engineered to support long-term cardiomyocyte (CM) survival. This RTG biopolymer provided a solution-based delivery vehicle of CMs, which transitioned to a gel-based matrix shortly after reaching body temperature. [Biomacromolecules] Full Article | Graphical Abstract

Biglycan Potentially Regulates Angiogenesis during Fracture Repair by Altering Expression and Function of Endostatin
Scientists showed that endothelial cells treated with endostatin had significantly decreased vessel length and vessel branches compared to untreated cells, while cells treated with endostatin and biglycan at a 1:1 M ratio had vessel length and vessel branches comparable to untreated cells. [Matrix Biol] Abstract

CD154 Induces Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 Secretion in Human Podocytes
Investigators studied the impact of the CD154/CD40 pathway on matrix metalloproteinase-9 expression by cultured human podocytes. The role of CD40/CD154 in matrix remodeling was evaluated upon exposure of podocytes to recombinant human CD154 or activated platelet supernatants from healthy human subjects. [J Cell Biochem] Abstract

    REVIEWS
Cells and Culture Systems Used to Model the Small Airway Epithelium
The authors focus on the commonly used small airway epithelial cells, their two-dimensional and three-dimensional culture techniques, and their comparative phenotype when cultured under these systems. [Lung] Abstract

    INDUSTRY NEWS
Methods Used to Create Textiles Also Could Help Manufacture Human Tissues
When certain types of materials are used, the “scaffolds” that are created to hold stem cells eventually degrade, leaving natural tissue in its place. The challenge is creating enough of the material on a scale that clinicians need to treat patients. Elizabeth Loboa and her team tested new methods to make the process of tissue engineering more cost effective and producible in larger quantities. [University of Missouri] Press Release

ERC Advanced Grant for Cancer Researcher from Vetmeduni Vienna
Veronika Sexl of the Institute for Pharmacology and Toxicology at Vetmeduni Vienna has been awarded a coveted European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant from the ERC. The grant will provide funding of about € 2.5 million over the next five years for research into new possibilities of cancer therapy using the enzyme CDK6. [University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna] Press Release
