PUBLICATIONS(Ranked by impact factor of the journal)Scientists investigated the influence of different extracellular matrix compositions on morphology, cellular arrangement and bile canaliculi formation as well as bile excretion processes in primary human hepatocytes sandwich cultures systematically. [Arch Toxicol] Abstract 3D Bioprinting Using a Templated Porous Bioink 3D tissue printing with adult stem cells was reported. A novel cell-containing multicomponent bioink was used in a two-step 3D printing process to engineer bone and cartilage architectures [Adv Healthc Mater] Full Article | Press Release Cadherin-11 Is a Novel Regulator of Extracellular Matrix Synthesis and Tissue Mechanics Scientists discovered that cadherin-11 (CDH11) regulates collagen and elastin synthesis both affecting the mechanical properties and contractile function of animal tissues. Using a Cdh11 null mouse model, they observed a significant reduction in the mechanical properties of Cdh11−/− as compared to wild type mouse tissues, such as aorta, bladder and skin. [J Cell Sci] Abstract Researchers report the effect of a Th2 cell product, extracellular matrix protein 1 (ECM1), on the differentiation of Th17 cells and the development of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). They demonstrated that ECM1 administration from day one to day seven following the EAE induction could ameliorate the Th17 cell responses and EAE development in vivo. [J Immunol] Abstract The authors tested whether or not the use of a collagen matrix (VCMX) results in short-term soft tissue volume increase at implant sites non-inferior to an autogenous subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) and evaluated safety and tissue integration of VCMX and SCTG. [J Clin Periodontol] Abstract Investigators elucidated the effect of cell-derived decellularized extracellular matrix ornamented 3D printed Ti-6Al-4V scaffolds on biological functions, involving cell adhesion, proliferation, and synthesis of vinculin and actin proteins. [J Biomed Mater Res A] Abstract Scientists compared the efficacy of three different 3D cell culture systems; collagen I, low attachment culture vessels and a modification of Fibrolife®, a specialized humanized cell culture medium devoid of animal-derived components, using breast cancer cell lines representative of the different molecular subtypes of breast cancer, cultured alone or with human mammary fibroblasts with a view to developing matrix-free humanized systems. [PLoS One] Full Article Quantitative Analysis of 3D Extracellular Matrix Remodelling by Pancreatic Stellate Cells Researchers present an integrated methodology where cell-extracellular matrix (ECM) interactions can be investigated in 3D environments via ECM remodelling. Monitoring and quantification of collagen-I structure in remodelled matrices, through designated algorithms, show that 3D matrices can be used to correlate remodelling with increased ECM stiffness observed in fibrosis. [Biol Open] Full Article The Impact of Decellularization Agents on Renal Tissue Extracellular Matrix The impact of five decellularization agents on renal tissue was examined using slices of porcine kidneys. The NaOH solution induced the most efficient cell removal, and resulted in the highest amount of cell viability and proliferation after recellularization, although it also produced the most significant damage to collagenous fiber networks, glycosaminoglycans and fibroblast growth factor.
