TOP STORYAn extremely photosensitive cell-responsive hydrogel composed of peptide-crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was designed to expand the biological applications of multiphoton lithography. PVA hydrogels were formed rapidly by ultraviolet light within one minute in the presence of cells, providing fully synthetic matrices that are instructive for cell-matrix remodeling, multicellular morphogenesis, and protease-mediated cell invasion. PUBLICATIONS(Ranked by impact factor of the journal)Composite Hydrogel Modified by IGF-1C Domain Improves Stem Cell Therapy for Limb Ischemia Researchers prepared a bioactive hydrogel by mixing chitosan and hyaluronic acid that is immobilized with C domain peptide of IGF-1 (IGF-1C), and examined whether this hydrogel could augment stem cell survival and therapeutic potential. Their results showed that IGF-1C-modified hydrogel increased in vitro viability and pro-angiogenic activity of adipose-derived stromal cells. [ACS Appl Mater Interfaces] Abstract The authors determined the mechanisms and consequences of FOXO3a activation in atherosclerosis and arterial remodeling after injury. FOXO3a activation induces vascular smooth muscle cell apoptosis and extracellular matrix breakdown, in part, because of transcriptional activation of MMP13. [Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol] Abstract | Full Article Scientists tested whether a synthetic extracellular matrix mimic, a hydrogel containing heparin, could ameliorate mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) engraftment and binding/release of soluble paracrine factors, thus improving MSC therapy efficacy. [Acta Biomater] Abstract | Graphical Abstract Targeting Insulin-Like Growth Factor-I and Extracellular Matrix Interactions in Melanoma Progression The authors report that the insulin-like growth factor-I:IGF binding protein-3:vitronectin trimeric complex stimulated a dose-dependent increase in the proliferation and migration of WM35 and Sk-MEL28 melanoma cells. In 3D Matrigel™ and hydrogel cultures, both cell lines formed primary tumor-like spheroids, which increased in size in a dose-dependent manner in response to the trimeric complex. [Sci Rep] Full Article The novel concept of an injectable hydrogel with semi-interpenetrating polymeric networks of heterotypic collagen fibrils, with tissue-specific collagen type III to collagen type I ratios, in a glycol-chitosan matrix was investigated. [Sci Rep] Full Article Researchers demonstrated that tissue-engineered hypertrophically-primed cartilage constructs can be developed from collagen-based scaffolds cultured with mesenchymal stem cells. [J Tissue Eng Regen Med] Abstract Scientists showed that it is possible to control the mechanical properties of collagen gels by manipulating gelation conditions near the sol gel transition. This manipulation was accomplished by performing gelation in two stages at different temperatures. [Soft Matter] Full Article Investigators evaluated a laminin-111 supplemented hyaluronic acid based hydrogel as a putative myoconductive scaffolding to be co-delivered with minced muscle grafts. [PLoS One] Full Article Improved Neuron Culture Using Scaffolds Made of Three-Dimensional PDMS Micro-Lattices Scientists used an elastomer, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), to produce lattice-type scaffolds from a photolithography defined template. They demonstrated that the 3D PDMS micro-lattices improve the survival and growth of cells, as well as the network formation of neurons. [Biomed Mater] Abstract | |

POLICY NEWSIn Trump’s First Year, Science Advice Sees a Marked Decline Since U.S. President Donald Trump took office, expert panels that provide key federal agencies with science advice have had fewer members and met less often than at any time since 1997, when the government started tracking such numbers, a new analysis concludes. [ScienceInsider] Editorial What a US Government Shutdown Would Mean for Science The clock is ticking for US lawmakers, who have fewer than two days to pass a new budget or face a government shutdown. Nature explains why politicians are struggling to reach a deal, what is at stake for science and whether a crisis can be avoided. [Nature News] Editorial
