CURRENT PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by Impact Factor of the Journal) LABORATORY RESEARCH Structures of the CXCR4 Chemokine GPCR With Small-Molecule and Cyclic Peptide Antagonists Here, researchers report five independent crystal structures of CXCR4 bound to an antagonist small molecule IT1t and a cyclic peptide CVX15 at 2.5 to 3.2 angstrom resolution. [Science] Early Lymphocyte Recovery Following Intensive Timed Sequential Chemotherapy for Acute Myelogenous Leukemia: Peripheral Oligoclonal Expansion of Regulatory T Cells To test the hypothesis that lymphocyte recovery mirrors ontogeny, researchers characterized early lymphocyte recovery and attendant cytokine profiles in twenty consecutive patients undergoing induction timed sequential chemotherapy for newly diagnosed acute myelogenous leukemia. [Blood] HMGB1-Induced Autophagy Promotes Chemotherapy Resistance in Leukemia Cells Here, researchers show that high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), the best characterized damage-associated molecular pattern, was released from leukemia cell lines after chemotherapy-induced cytotoxicity and activated autophagy to protect against injury. [Leukemia] A DEAB-Sensitive Aldehyde Dehydrogenase Regulates Hematopoietic Stem and Progenitor Cells Development During Primitive Hematopoiesis in Zebrafish Embryos Although aldehyde dehydrogenase activity has become a surrogate of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells, its function during hematopoiesis was unclear. Here, researchers examined its role in zebrafish hematopoiesis based on pharmacological inhibition and morpholino knockdown. [Leukemia] The Combination of a Histone Deacetylase Inhibitor With the BH3-Mimetic GX15-070 has Synergistic Antileukemia Activity by Activating Both Apoptosis and Autophagy Researchers analyzed the cellular and molecular effects of two different histone deacetylase inhibitors, MGCD0103 and vorinostat, in combination with GX15-070, a BH3-mimetic, in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cell lines and primary AML cells, and demonstrated that the combination has a synergistic antileukemia effect. [Autophagy] Riccardin D, a Novel Macrocyclic Bisbibenzyl, Induces Apoptosis of Human Leukemia Cells by Targeting DNA Topoisomerase II Researchers studied the effect of riccardin D, a macrocyclic bisbibenzyl, which was isolated from the Chinese liverwort plant, on human leukemia cells and the underlying molecular mechanism. [Invest New Drugs] CLINICAL RESEARCH Secondary Solid Cancers After Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation Using Busulfan-Cyclophosphamide Conditioning Researchers evaluated the incidence and risk-factors for solid cancers after hematopoietic-cell transplant (HCT) using myeloablative busulfan-cyclophosphamide (Bu-Cy) conditioning in 4,318 recipients of first allogeneic HCT for acute myeloid leukemia in first complete remission (N=1,742) and chronic myeloid leukemia in first chronic phase (N=2,576). [Blood] INDUSTRY NEWS NIH Funds Center of Excellence for Molecular Hematology at Cincinnati Children’s The National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases, one of 19 National Institutes of Health, has approved a five-year, $3.4 million grant for Cincinnati Children’s to establish the multi-disciplinary center. [Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Press Release] Mylan Receives Approval for Fludarabine Phosphate Injection, USP Mylan Inc. announced that its subsidiary Bioniche Pharma received final approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) for Fludarabine Phosphate Injection USP, 25 mg/mL, packaged in 50 mg/2 mL Single-dose Vials. [Mylan Inc. Press Release] Cepheid Collaborates With Pharmaceutical Leader on Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia Cepheid announced an exclusive collaboration with Novartis for the commercialization of a test for monitoring the BCR-ABL gene transcript in peripheral blood specimens from patients diagnosed with Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myelogenous leukemia. [Cepheid Press Release] STEMSOFT® Software Inc. Licenses StemLab® Software to The Blood Connection STEMSOFT Software Inc., the leading provider of software solutions for the cell therapy and transplant community, is pleased to announce the licensing of StemLab, the leading cell therapy transplant and cord blood banking laboratory software, to The Blood Connection in Piedmont, South Carolina.
