    TOP STORY
Stem and Progenitor Cells in Myelodysplastic Syndromes Show Aberrant Stage Specific Expansion and Harbor Genetic and Epigenetic Alterations
Researchers studied phenotypic and molecular alterations in highly fractionated stem and progenitor populations in a variety of myelodysplastic syndrome subtypes (MDS). They observed an expansion of the phenotypically primitive long-term hematopoietic stem cells in MDS, which was most pronounced in higher risk cases. [Blood] Abstract | Press Release

    LABORATORY RESEARCH

Stress Hematopoiesis Reveals Abnormal Control of Self-Renewal, Lineage-Bias and Myeloid Differentiation in Mll Partial Tandem Duplication (Mll-PTD) Hematopoietic Stem/Progenitor Cells
Scientists investigated hematopoietic stem/progenitor cell phenotypes of Mll-PTD knock-in mice. [Blood] Abstract

Overexpression of the Anti-Apoptotic Protein AVEN Contributes to Increased Malignancy in Hematopoietic Neoplasms
Results demonstrate that the anti-apoptotic molecule, AVEN, functions as an oncoprotein in hematopoietic neoplasms. [Oncogene] Abstract

Expression and Inducibility of Cytochrome P450s in Human Cord Blood CD34+ Stem Cell Derived Differentiating Neuronal Cells
Researchers report significant expression and catalytic activity of selected cytochrome P450s in human cord blood hematopoietic stem cell-derived neuronal cells at various stages of maturity. [Toxicol Sci] Abstract

Inhibition of Lnk in Mouse Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells Promotes Hematopoietic Cell Generation
Researchers showed that the inhibition of Lnk in embryonic stem and induced pluripotent stem cells could result in the efficient generation and expansion of hematopoietic cells. [Stem Cells Dev] Abstract

Differential Role of gp130-Dependent STAT and Ras Signaling for Hematopoiesis following Bone-Marrow Transplantation
Scientists unraveled a vital function of interleukin-6/gp130-STAT1/3 signals for bone marrow engraftment and hematopoiesis, as well as for host survival after transplantation. They suggested STAT1/3 and ras-dependent pathways thereby exert distinct functions on individual bone-marrow-lineages. [PLoS One] Full Article

Development of a Multi-Step Leukemogenesis Model of MLL-Rearranged Leukemia Using Humanized Mice
Investigators developed a humanized mouse model for human leukemia by transplanting human cord blood-derived hematopoietic stem cells transduced with an mixed-lineage-leukemia (MLL)-AF10 oncogene into a supra-immunodeficient mouse strain, NOD/Shi-scid, IL-2Rγ−/− mice. [PLoS One] Full Article

Efficient and Simultaneous Generation of Hematopoietic and Vascular Progenitors from Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells
Scientists present comparative differentiation results for simultaneously generating hematopoietic and vascular progenitors from both human embryonic stem cells and fibroblast-human induced pluripotent stem cells. [Cytometry A] Abstract

    CLINICAL RESEARCH

Dose Intensification of Daunorubicin and Cytarabine during Treatment of Adult Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia: Results of Cancer and Leukemia Group B Study 19802
Cancer and Leukemia Group B Study 19802, a phase II study, evaluated whether dose intensification of daunorubicin and cytarabine could improve disease-free survival in adults with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and whether high-dose systemic and intrathecal methotrexate could replace cranial radiotherapy for central nervous system prophylaxis. [Cancer] Abstract

The Effect of Acute Graft versus Host Disease on the Outcome of Second Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant in Children
Researchers evaluated the outcome of second allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for children with relapsed leukemia with focus on factors that potentially improve outcome. [Leuk Lymphoma] Abstract
