    TOP STORY
Musashi-2 Controls Cell Fate, Lineage Bias, and TGF-β Signaling in HSCs
Researchers report that conditional ablation of the RNA-binding protein Msi2 results in a failure of hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) maintenance and engraftment caused by a loss of quiescence and increased commitment divisions. [J Exp Med] Abstract
Take the "if" out of "diff": Reduce variability when differentiating to hematopoietic cells

PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
    LABORATORY RESEARCH

Bcl2 Overexpression Rescues the Hematopoietic Stem Cell Defects in Ku70-Deficient Mice by Restoration of Quiescence
Investigators found that HSC from Ku70-deficient mice are severely defective in self-renewal, competitive repopulation and BM hematopoietic niche occupancy, and loss of quiescence results in the dramatic defect in the maintenance of Ku70-deficient HSC. [Blood] Abstract

Selectins and Their Ligands Are Required for Homing and Engraftment of BCR-ABL1+ Leukemic Stem Cells in the Bone Marrow Niche
Researchers investigated adhesion pathways that contribute to engraftment of BCR-ABL1-induced chronic myelogenous leukemia-like myeloproliferative neoplasia in a mouse retroviral transduction/transplantation model. [Blood] Abstract

Hematopoietic Stem Cell Cytokines and Fibroblast Growth Factor-2 Stimulate Human Endothelial Cell-Pericyte Tube Co-Assembly in 3D Fibrin Matrices under Serum-Free Defined Conditions
Scientists describe a novel 3D fibrin matrix model using recombinant hematopoietic stem cell cytokines under serum-free defined conditions which promotes the assembly of human endothelial cell tubes with co-associated pericytes. [PLoS One] Full Article

Radiologic Differences between Bone Marrow Stromal and Hematopoietic Progenitor Cell Lines from Fanconi Anemia (Fancd2-/-) Mice
Researchers measured stress of hematopoiesis in long-term marrow cultures and radiosensitivity in clonogenic survival curves, as well as comet tail intensity, total antioxidant stores and radiation-induced gene expression in hematopoietic progenitor compared to bone marrow stromal cell lines. [Radiat Res] Abstract

Transcription Factor SCL/TAL1 Mediates the Phosphorylation of MEK/ERK Pathway in Umbilical Cord Blood CD34+ Stem Cells during Hematopoietic Differentiation
Investigators aimed to elucidate the effects of the epidermal growth factor receptor signal pathways underlying the biologic activity of stem cell leukemia (SCL)/T-cell acute lymphocytic leukemia 1 (TAL1) on normal hematopoietic development. [Blood Cells Mol Dis] Abstract

    CLINICAL RESEARCH

Identification of a Permissible HLA Mismatch in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation
Cohorts of 4,779 and 1,854 patients with hematologic malignancies receiving hematopoietic stem cell transplantation with unrelated donors matched in 8/8 and 7/8 HLA alleles were examined. [Blood] Abstract

Continuing Increased Risk of Oral/Esophageal Cancer after Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation in Adults in Association with Chronic Graft-versus-Host Disease
The number of long-term survivors after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) showed steady increase in the past two decades. Second malignancies after HSCT are a devastating late complication. Investigators analyzed the incidence of, risk compared with that in the general population, and risk factors for secondary solid cancers. [Ann Oncol] Abstract

Visfatin Concentrations in Children with Leukemia before and after Stem Cell Transplantation
Visfatin (VF) is an adipocytokine, which performs many functions, including enhancing cell proliferation and biosynthesis of nicotinamide mono- and dinucleotides. It also seems to be involved in the development of glucose metabolism disturbances. Researchers aimed to determine of VF concentrations in children with leukemia, treated with stem cell transplantation. [Exp Hematol] Abstract

Technical Bulletin: Assays For Cord Blood

    REVIEWS
Advances in Understanding the Leukemia Microenvironment
Key components of the bone marrow microenvironment as a home for normal hematopoietic stem cells and the leukemia stem cell niches, and the molecular pathways critical for microenvironment/leukemia interactions via cytokines, chemokines and adhesion molecules as well as hypoxic conditions, are described in this review. [Br J Haematol] Abstract
