Scientists report a culture system that supports development of CD34⁺ hematopoietic stem cell progenitors into the three major human dendritic cell subsets, monocytes, granulocytes, and NK and B cells. [J Exp Med] Abstract

Primitive Macrophages Control HSPC Mobilization and Definitive Hematopoiesis
The authors identified an unexpected primitive macrophage population accumulated in the dorsal mesenteric mesoderm surrounding the dorsal aorta of the human embryo and studied its function in the transparent zebrafish embryo. They revealed dynamic interactions occurring between hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs) and primitive macrophages in the aorta-gonad-mesonephros. [Nat Commun] Abstract

Estrogen-Inducible sFRP5 Inhibits Early B-Lymphopoiesis In Vivo, but Not during Pregnancy
Scientists showed that estrogen-induced soluble Frizzled-related proteins (sFRPs), and particularly sFRP5, suppress B-lymphopoiesis in vivo in transgenic mice. sFRP5 deficiency reduced the number of hematopoietic stem cells and primitive lymphoid progenitors in the bone marrow, particularly when estrogen was administered. Expression deletion of Hiwi, a human Piwi homolog, has been reported to be implicated in leukemogenesis. MD Anderson Receives $22.3 Million in CPRIT Research Funding
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has received more than $22 million in research grants from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT). The CPRIT awards will go toward studies in the areas of breast, skin, prostate, pancreas, colon and lung cancers in adults; leukemia and brain cancer in children, and for studies aimed at preventing colon cancer and lung cancer.
