PUBLICATIONS(Ranked by impact factor of the journal)Scientists identified the circadian clock transcription factor SHARP1 as a novel oncogenic target in MLL-AF6 acute myeloid leukemia (AML), which has the worst prognosis among all subtypes of MLL-rearranged AMLs. [Nat Commun] Full Article SHP-1 Regulates Hematopoietic Stem Cell Quiescence by Coordinating TGF-β Signaling The authors report that Shp-1 knockout HSCs have attenuated quiescence and impaired long-term self-renewal. SHP-1-activated HSCs were surrounded by megakaryocytes, which regulated HSC quiescence by producing TGF-β1. [J Exp Med] Abstract | Graphical Abstract SETDB2 Links E2A-PBX1 to Cell-Cycle Dysregulation in Acute Leukemia through CDKN2C Repression Scientists demonstrated an oncogenic role for the protein lysine methyltransferase SETDB2 in leukemia pathogenesis. SETDB2 was relatively dispensable for normal hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell proliferation. [Cell Rep] Full Article | Graphical Abstract A Trib2-p38 Axis Controls Myeloid Leukemia Cell Cycle and Stress Response Signaling Researchers demonstrated that Trib2 deficiency conferred a growth and survival advantage both at steady state and in stress conditions in leukemia cells. [Cell Death Dis] Full Article Investigators identified a specific down-regulation of brain acid-soluble protein 1 (BASP1) in t(8;21) acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Ectopic expression of BASP1 inhibited proliferation and the colony-forming ability of A/E-positive AML cell lines and led to apoptosis and cell cycle arrest. [Exp Mol Med] Full Article Scientists demonstrated that BCR crosslinking, CD40 stimulation, and coculture with stromal cells increases PIMs expression in chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells, indicating microenvironment‐dependent PIMs regulation. [J Cell Mol Med] Full Article The authors found that irradiated hematopoietic stem and early progenitor cells, but not lineage-committed progenitors, undergo rapid ATM-dependent apoptosis, which is suppressed upon interaction with bone-marrow stroma cells. [Sci Rep] Full Article Researchers found a percentage of murine eosinophils, natural killer and natural killer T cells were capable of interacting with hyaluronan at steady state. Hematopoietic stem cells bound minimal hyaluronan at steady state, and this was increased when the cells were induced to proliferate whereas multipotent progenitors had an increased ability to bind hyaluronan at steady state. [PLoS One] Full Article CLINICAL RESEARCHThe authors report on the screening and development of haploidentical hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for adult patients with clinically aggressive sickle cell disease at their institution. [Biol Blood Marrow Transplant] Abstract | Press Release Researchers compared the therapeutic outcomes of haploidentical donor allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) with those of matched related donors-HSCT for severe aplastic anemia. POLICY NEWSThe Salk Institute for Biological Studies has placed prominent cancer and gene therapy scientist Inder Verma on administrative leave and launched an investigation into allegations against him. [ScienceInsider] Editorial Women Less Successful When Applying for Patents Women inventors have less success than men at each step of the patent application process in the U.S., according to a study published this month in Nature Biotechnology. [The Scientist] Editorial Scientists’ Early Grant Success Fuels Further Funding Young researchers who narrowly miss out on postdoctoral grant struggle to compete with those who just qualify. [Nature News] Editorial A statement released by 317 National Academy of Sciences members challenges the widespread dismissal of science and scientific understanding by the Trump administration.
