PUBLICATIONS(Ranked by impact factor of the journal)Scientists focused on the functional role of the PDGFRα-La/SSB-LAMB1 pathway and its molecular link to K19 expression in human hepatocellular carcinoma. [Oncogene] Full Article Investigators found that deficiency in TIR domain–containing adaptor-inducing interferon-β (TRIF), a cytosolic adaptor that transduces some toll-like receptor signals, worsened hepatic steatosis induced by a high-fat diet and that such exacerbation was independent of myeloid cells. [Sci Signal] Abstract Researchers revealed that differentiation alters early secretory gene expression. They observed significant isoform-specific upregulation of the inner coat protein complex II components, Sec23A and Sec24D, via the transmembrane bZIP transcription factor, CREB3L2/BBF2H7, during hepatic stellate cell activation. [Sci Rep] Full Article The authors investigated the potential clinical, pathological, prognostic value, role and mechanism of BRCA1-associated RING Domain 1 in hepatocellular carcinoma. [Sci Rep] Full Article Hepatitis C Virus Core Protein Modulates Endoglin (Cd105) Signaling Pathway for Liver Pathogenesis It has been shown that hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection induces epithelial-mesenchymal transition state and cancer stem-like cell properties in human hepatocytes. Scientists observed increased endoglin expression on the cell surface of HCV core expressing hepatocellular carcinoma cell line or immortalized human hepatocytes and activation of its downstream signaling molecules. [J Virol] Abstract Researchers analyzed the cell death-inducing mechanisms of resveratrol-006, a novel resveratrol derivative in human liver cancer cells in vitro. [Acta Pharmacol Sin] Full Article The authors examined the expression of TFDP3 in human liver tissues. They then detected the expression of TFDP3 at the RNA level and protein level in L-02 cell line and HepG2 cell line, and the location of TFDP3 was defined by immunofluorescence technique. [PLoS One] Full Article Expression of Cytokine and Extracellular Matrix mRNAs in Fetal Hepatic Stellate Cells Among cytokines, insulin-like growth factor 2 (Igf2) was highly expressed at all three stages analyzed. Among liver cells, Igf2 was predominantly expressed in hepatoblast-like cells at all three stages examined, suggesting that hepatoblast-like cells are an essential part of the niche that maintains homeostasis of hematopoietic cells in embryonic mouse liver. SCIENCE NEWSHepatitis A Vaccination for Alaskan Children has Wiped Out the Virus A comprehensive hepatitis A vaccination program established in Alaska in the 1990s, which became a requirement for school entry in 2001, has virtually wiped out the virus in the native peoples of Alaska, where it had been endemic. [Press release from the World Hepatitis Alliance discussing research presented at the World Indigenous Peoples’ Conference on Viral Hepatitis in Anchorage, Alaska] Press Release Cherokee Nation American Indian Tribe Showing it is Possible to Eliminate Hepatitis C The Cherokee Nation American Indian population is aiming to eliminate hepatitis C virus among its tribal citizens, where already almost half have been screened for the virus and around one quarter of those estimated to be infected have already been cured. POLICY NEWSUS Biomedical-Research Facilities Unprepared for Attacks and Natural Disasters When Hurricane Sandy hit New York City in 2012, the storm destroyed scientific equipment worth more than US$20 million at the New York University Langone Medical Center. Tropical Storm Allison hit the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston in 2001, and caused so much damage that some researchers had to restart their careers elsewhere. Despite such catastrophes, a report found that many research institutions in the United States are still unprepared for disasters. [Nature News] Editorial Americans Are Becoming More Open to Human Genome Editing, Survey Finds, but Concerns Remain Earlier surveys of Americans found a reluctance to support human genome editing, with many respondents expressing ethical and other concerns about such intentional tinkering. A new survey found that two-thirds of the 1600 respondents thought genome editing was generally “acceptable.” But that acceptance was qualified, and colored by religious beliefs and scientific knowledge. [ScienceInsider] Editorial Thousands across India March in Support of Science Thousands of scientists, university students and science enthusiasts gathered in dozens of Indian cities to march in support of science — lamenting their country’s low levels of funding for research, and complaining about government promotion of ‘unscientific ideas’.
