Medical Research Council Scientists Announce Advance in Understanding Body’s Natural Defences
Researchers showed that a newly discovered protein, HVCN1, regulates antibody production through modulation of intracellular oxidation. In the absence of HVCN1, the immune response is blunted. [Press release from University of Leicester discussing online prepublication in Nature Immunology]

Double Agents: Penn Researchers Identify Immune Cells That Fight Parasites May Promote Allergies and Asthma
Researchers, studying how the immune system operates, have discovered a previously unidentified cell population that may be the body’s double-edged sword, fighting off parasitic infections but also causing the harmful immune responses that can lead to allergies and asthma. [University of Pennsylvania Press Release]

How Cells Protect Themselves from Cancer
Now for the first time, using an animal model for lymphoma, cancer researchers have shown that two protection programs work together through an interaction with normal immune cells to prevent tumors. [Press release from ScienceDaily discussing online prepublication in Cancer Cell]

    CURRENT PUBLICATIONS

CD169+ Macrophages Present Lipid Antigens to Mediate Early Activation of i NKT Cells in Lymph Nodes
Although it is known that invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells recognize glycolipids presented by CD1d, how and where they encounter antigen in vivo remains unclear. [Nat Immunol]

    Tumor Stroma-Derived TGF-Beta Limits Myc-Driven Lymphomagenesis Via Suv39h1-Dependent Senescence
Using the E(mu)-myc transgenic mouse lymphoma model, researchers show in vivo that apoptotic lymphoma cells activate macrophages to secrete transforming growth factor-beta as a critical non-cell-autonomous inducer of cellular senescence. [Cancer Cell]

Complement Receptor 2/CD21-Negative Human Naive B Cells Mostly Contain Autoreactive Unresponsive Clones
Researchers found that some rheumatoid arthritis patients display an increased frequency of CD21-/lo B cells in their blood. [Blood]

Genomic Definition of Multiple Ex Vivo Regulatory T Cell Subphenotypes
For a better perspective on transcriptional control in regulatory T (Treg) cells, researchers compared gene expression profiles of a broad panel of Treg cells from various origins or anatomical locations. [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA]

Notch Signaling Drives IL-22 Secretion in CD4+ T Cells by Stimulating the Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor
This study identifies a Notch-aryl hydrocarbon receptor axis that regulates IL-22 expression and fine-tunes immune system control of inflammatory responses. [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA]

Dendritic Cells Control T Cell Tonic Signaling Required for Responsiveness to Foreign Antigen
These findings indicate that dendritic cells are specialized cells that not only present foreign antigen, but also promote a “tonic” state in T cells for antigen responsiveness. [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA]

Chemokine Receptor 4 Plays a Key Role in T Cell Recruitment into the Airways of Asthmatic Patients
These results provide evidence that chemokine receptor type 4 (CCR4) might play a role in allergen-driven Th2 cell accumulation in asthmatic airways. Targeting this chemokine receptor in patients with asthma might reduce Th2 cell-driven airway inflammation; therefore, CCR4 antagonists could be an effective new therapy for asthma. [J Immunol]

Polycomb Group Gene Product Ring1B Regulates Th2-Driven Airway Inflammation through the Inhibition of Bim-Mediated Apoptosis of Effector Th2 Cells in the Lung
In this paper, researchers extended the study of polycomb group (PcG) molecules to the regulation of in vivo Th2 responses, especially allergic airway inflammation, by using conditional Ring1B-deficient mice with a CD4 T cell-specific deletion of the Ring1B gene (Ring1B-/- mice). [J Immunol]

Stem cell researchers are worried that they’ll have to stop work with some of their favorite cell lines. [ScienceInsider]

Epeius Biotechnologies Receives Notice Of Patent Allowance For Tumor-Targeted Cancer Vaccines
Epeius Biotechnologies Corporation received a notice of allowance from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for a crucial patent covering its leading tumor-targeted vaccine technology for cancer immunotherapy. [Biocompare]

Viron Reports Positive Proof of Concept Results in Arthritis for its VT-346 Anti-TNF Therapeutic
Viron Therapeutics Inc. announced that VT-346, an anti-TNF protein therapeutic, demonstrated positive results in a pivotal proof of concept study in the gold standard transgenic mouse model for arthritis. [Viron Therapeutics Inc., Press Release]
