    SCIENCE NEWS

New Model Tracks the Immune Response to a T
Using T cells primed for the infectious disease toxoplasmosis, Whitehead Institute researchers have created novel mouse models of the immune system that more accurately reflect how immune cells actually respond to pathogens in their presence. [Press release from Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research discussing online prepublication in Science]

The Immune System’s Guard Against Cancer
Researchers have discovered how beta-interferon can inhibit tumour growth. [Press release from Helmholtz Center for Infection Research discussing online prepublication in Journal of Clinical Investigation]

BUSPH Study Links Rheumatoid Arthritis To Vitamin D Deficiency
Women living in the northeastern United States are more likely to develop rheumatoid arthritis, suggesting a link between the autoimmune disease and vitamin D deficiency, says a new study. [Press release from Biocompare discussing online prepublication in Environmental Health Perspectives]

    CURRENT PUBLICATIONS

Transnuclear Mice with Predefined T Cell Receptor Specificities Against Toxoplasma gondii Obtained Via SCNT
Using epigenetic reprogramming via somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), researchers demonstrated that T cells with predefined specificities against Toxoplasma gondii can be used to generate mouse models that express the T cell receptor from their endogenous loci, without experimentally introduced genetic modification. [Science]

The Transcription Factor c-Myb Primes CD4+CD8+ Immature Thymocytes for Selection Into the iNKT Lineage
Here researchers show that the transcription factor c-Myb has a central role in priming double-positive (DP) thymocytes to enter the iNKT lineage by simultaneously regulating CD1d expression, the half-life of DP cells and expression of SLAMF1, SLAMF6 and SAP. [Nat Immunol]

The Zinc-Finger Protein MAZR is Part of the Transcription Factor Network that Controls the CD4 Versus CD8 Lineage Fate of Double-Positive Thymocytes
MAZR is part of the transcription factor network that regulates the CD8 lineage differentiation of double-positive thymocytes. [Nat Immunol]

E-Cadherin Marks a Subset of Inflammatory Dendritic Cells that Promote T Cell-Mediated Colitis
Here, researchers show that monocyte-derived inflammatory dendritic cells that express E-cadherin, the receptor for CD103, promote intestinal inflammation. [Immunity]

Indirect Inhibition of Toll-like Receptor and Type I Interferon Responses by ITAM-Coupled Receptors and Integrins
These results provide an indirect mechanism of cross-inhibition of toll-like receptors and delineate a signaling pathway important for deactivation of macrophages. [ Immunity]

A Defunctioning Polymorphism in FCGR2B is Associated with Protection Against Malaria but Susceptibility to Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Researchers show that a single-nucleotide polymorphism in human FCGR2B that abrogates receptor function is strongly associated with susceptibility to systemic lupus erythematosus in both Caucasians and Southeast Asians. [Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A]

T and B Cell Hyperactivity and Autoimmunity Associated with Niche-Specific Defects in Apoptotic Body Clearance in TIM-4-Deficient Mice
In this study, researchers describe the generation of TIM-4-deficient mice and address whether TIM-4 serves a unique function in vivo. [Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A]

TGF-Beta Enhances Effector Th1 Cell Activation but Promotes Self-Regulation Via IL-10
Using myelin-specific T cell receptor transgenic mice, researchers demonstrate that TGF-beta elicits differential effects on naive versus effector Th1 cells. [J Immunol]

Anti-Inflammatory Activity of PYNOD and Its Mechanism in Humans and Mice
In this study, researchers investigated the molecular mechanism of PYNOD’s anti-inflammatory activity in vitro and its expression and function in mice. [J Immunol]

Activation of Murine Macrophages Via TLR2 and TLR4 Is Negatively Regulated by a Lyn/PI3K Module and Promoted by SHIP1
Researchers demonstrate in this study that the Src family kinase Lyn negatively regulates TLR signaling in murine bone marrow-derived macrophages and in vivo. [J Immunol]

Association between Residences in U.S. Northern Latitudes and Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Spatial Analysis of the Nurses’ Health Study
The etiology of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) remains largely unknown although epidemiologic studies suggest genetic and environmental factors may play a role. Geographic variation in incident RA has been observed at the regional level. [Environ Health Perspect]

Stem cell scientists at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston were awarded stimulus grants totaling almost $2 million to research experimental treatments for blood disorders and inherited lung diseases affecting children. [The University of Texas Health Science Center Press Release]

Baxter Drug Helps Alzheimer’s Patients Maintain Brain (Update1)
Baxter International’s treatment for immune system disorders also helped Alzheimer’s patients retain brain size and function after 18 months in a study that suggests the drug may top current regimens, researchers said. [Bloomberg]
