    SCIENCE NEWS

Caltech Biologists Discover How T Cells Make a Commitment
When does a cell decide its particular identity? In the case of T cells, the answer is when the cells begin expressing Bcl11b. [Press release from California Institute of Technology discussing online prepublication in Science]

Genetic Regulator Opens New Avenues to AIDS, Immune System Research
Researchers have discovered that a genetic regulator, which is critical to many life functions, also plays a key role in the formation of T cells. [Press release from Oregon State University discussing online prepublication in Science]

Researchers Discover Trigger to Early, Effective Antibody Response

CURRENT PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by Impact Factor of the Journal)

Genome-Wide Association Study in Alopecia Areata Implicates Both Innate and Adaptive Immunity
Researchers have defined the genetic underpinnings of Alopecia Areata (AA), placing it within the context of shared pathways among autoimmune diseases, and implicating a novel disease mechanism, the upregulation of ULBP ligands, in triggering autoimmunity. [Nature]

An Early T Cell Lineage Commitment Checkpoint Dependent on the Transcription Factor Bcl11b
Researchers found that Bcl11b is necessary for T lineage commitment in mice and is specifically required both to repress natural killer cell-associated genes and to down-regulate a battery of stem cell or progenitor cell genes at the pivotal stage of commitment. [Science] [Science]

T Cells Expressing the Transcription Factor PLZF Regulate the Development of Memory-Like CD8+ T Cells
The findings identify a previously unknown mechanism of regulation of CD8+ T cells via the production of IL-4 by PLZF+ T cells. [Nat Immunol]

MicroRNA-34a Perturbs B Lymphocyte Development by Repressing the Forkhead Box Transcription Factor Foxp1
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) can influence lineage choice or affect critical developmental checkpoints during hematopoiesis. Researchers examined the role of the p53-induced microRNA miR-34a in hematopoiesis by gain-of-function analysis in murine bone marrow. [Immunity]

Identification of an Immediate Foxp3- Precursor to Foxp3+ Regulatory T Cells in Peripheral Lymphoid Organs of Nonmanipulated Mice
Researchers compared events early during agonist-driven generation of Foxp3+ TCR transgenic T cells to polyclonal CD4+ T cell populations in unmanipulated mice. [J Exp Med]

B Cell Depletion Reduces the Development of Atherosclerosis in Mice
Researchers unexpectedly show that mature B cell depletion using a CD20-specific monoclonal antibody induces a significant reduction of atherosclerosis in various mouse models of the disease. [J Exp Med]

Vitamins C and E for Prevention of Pre-Eclampsia in Women with Type I Diabetes: A Randomised Placebo-Controlled Trial
Researchers aimed to assess whether supplementation with vitamins C and E reduced incidence of pre-eclampsia in women with type I diabetes. [Lancet Oncol]

NLRC5 Limits the Activation of Inflammatory Pathways
In this study, researchers present the identification and characterization of NLRC5, a nod-like receptor protein whose expression is found predominantly in cells of the myeloid and lymphoid lineages. [J Immunol]

Adipose Tissue and Wharton’s Jelly Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Suppress Lymphocyte Responses by Secreting Leukemia Inhibitory Factor
In this study, researchers investigated the capacity of mesenchymal stromal cells derived from adipose tissue and Wharton’s jelly to modulate lymphocyte proliferation as well as their impact on regulatory T cells. [Tissue Eng Part A]
