Oral Tolerance to Food-Induced Systemic Anaphylaxis Mediated by the C-Type Lectin SIGNR1  ShareThis
Researchers propose that a C-type lectin receptor, SIGNR-1 (also called Cd209b), helps to condition dendritic cells in the gastrointestinal lamina propria for the induction of oral tolerance in a model of food-induced anaphylaxis. [Nat Med]

    SCIENCE NEWS

NYU Langone Scientists Find Key Pathway Implicated in Progression of Childhood Cancer
According to a new study, a protein crucial for the immune response appears to be a key player in the progression of T cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. [Press release from NYU Langone Medical Center discussing online prepublication in Cancer Cell]

U-M Researchers Examine New Treatment for Type I Diabetes
Using immunology laboratory findings and mathematical models, researchers expect to create a detailed picture of the immune responses leading to the pancreatic cell damage in those considered at risk for developing type I diabetes. [University of Michigan Press Release]

CURRENT PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by Impact Factor of the Journal)

Confinement-Optimized Three-Dimensional T Cell Amoeboid Motility is Modulated via Myosin IIA-Regulated Adhesions
Here, researchers show that in vivo, myosin IIA-deficient T cells had a triad of defects, including overadherence to high-endothelial venules, less interstitial migration and inefficient completion of recirculation through lymph nodes. [Nat Immunol]

Human CD14dim Monocytes Patrol and Sense Nucleic Acids and Viruses via TLR7 and TLR8 Receptors
Here, researchers have characterized the functions of human monocytes that lack CD14 (CD14dim) and express CD16. CD14dim monocytes were genetically distinct from natural killer cells. [Immunity]

Immunodominant T Cell Responses to Dengue Virus NS3 are Associated with DHF
In this study, researchers set out to study T cell responses across the entire dengue virus proteome and to see whether these were related to disease severity in a cohort of dengue-infected children from Thailand. [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA]

Shared Molecular Amino Acid Signature in the HLA-DR Peptide Binding Pocket Predisposes to Both Autoimmune Diabetes and Thyroiditis
Type IA diabetes (T1D) and autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) frequently occur together in the same individual, a condition classified as a variant of the autoimmune polyglandular syndrome type 3 (APS3). Because T1D and AITD are individually strongly associated with different HLA class II sequences, researchers asked which HLA class II pocket sequence and structure confer joint susceptibility to both T1D and AITD in the same individual (APS3v). [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA]

Chemotherapy-Induced Genotoxic Stress Promotes Sensitivity to Natural Killer Cell Cytotoxicity by Enabling Missing-Self Recognition
Here, researchers show that Clr-b is rapidly downregulated in cells undergoing genotoxic and cellular stress at the level of both RNA and surface protein. [Cancer Res]

T Cells Expressing Constitutively Active Akt Resist Multiple Tumor-associated Inhibitory Mechanisms
Constitutively active Akt-transduced T cells showed resistance to several evasion strategies employed by tumors and may therefore enhance the antitumor activity of adoptively transferred T lymphocytes. [Mol Ther]

Combined Administration of a Mutant TGF-Beta1/Fc and Rapamycin Promotes Induction of Regulatory T Cells and Islet Allograft Tolerance
In this study, researchers report the development of a long-lasting autoactive human mutant TGF-beta1/Fc fusion protein that acts in conjunction with rapamycin to inhibit T cell proliferation and induce the de novo generation of Foxp3+ regulatory T cell in the periphery, while at the same time inhibiting IL-6-mediated Th17 cell differentiation. [J Immunol]

TLR Agonists that Induce IFN-Beta Abrogate Resident Macrophage Suppression of T Cells
The results suggest TLR agonists that activate TRIF, and consequently induce IFN-beta, but not those that exclusively signal through MyD88, abrogate the immunosuppressive properties of resident tissue macrophages, and thus promote T cell expansion and elimination of invading microorganisms. [J Immunol]

The Maryland Stem Cell Research Commission will host the Third Annual Maryland Stem Cell Research Symposium in partnership with the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute of Standards and Technology on Sept. 22, 2010. [The Maryland Stem Cell Research Commission Press Release]

Inovio Pharmaceuticals Achieves Unprecedented T Cell Immune Responses in Human Trial of DNA Vaccine for Cervical Dysplasia and Cancer Caused by HPV
Inovio Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced that it has achieved best-in-class immune responses in its Phase I dose escalation study of VGX-3100, its DNA vaccine to treat pre-cancerous cervical dysplasias and cervical cancers caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) types 16 and 18. [Inovio Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Press Release]

Scott & White Healthcare – Round Rock to Participate in International Clinical Trial Investigating Lung Cancer Treatment
Scott & White Healthcare is recruiting patients for a Phase III lung cancer trial aimed at preventing the disease’s recurrence in previously treated patients. The trial will evaluate the potential of an immunotherapy called Antigen-Specific Cancer Immunotherapeutic for the treatment of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer. [Scott & White Healthcare Press Release]
