CURRENT PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by Impact Factor of the Journal) DNA Damage-Mediated Induction of a Chemoresistant Niche Here, researchers use a well-established mouse model of Burkitt’s lymphoma to show that paracrine factors in the tumor microenvironment modulate lymphoma cell survival following the administration of genotoxic chemotherapy. [Cell] Fate Mapping Analysis Reveals That Adult Microglia Derive from Primitive Macrophages Researchers show that postnatal hematopoietic progenitors do not significantly contribute to microglia homeostasis in the adult brain. [Science] Critical Role for the Chemokine Receptor CXCR6 in NK Cell-Mediated Antigen-Specific Memory of Haptens and Viruses Researchers report that hepatic natural killer (NK) cells, but not splenic or naïve NK cells, also developed specific memory of vaccines containing antigens from influenza, vesicular stomatitis virus or human immunodeficiency virus type 1. [Nat Immunol] Carcinoembryonic Antigen-Related Cell Adhesion Molecule-1 (CEACAM1) Regulates Granulopoiesis by Inhibition of Granulocyte Colony-Stimulating Factor Receptor CEACAM1 expression correlated with granulocytic differentiation, and Ceacam1-/- mice developed neutrophilia because of loss of the Src-homology-phosphatase-1 (SHP-1)-dependent inhibition of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor receptor (G-CSFR) signal transducer and activator of transcription (Stat3) pathway provided by CEACAM1. [Immunity] Immune Modulation by Fas Ligand Reverse Signaling: Lymphocyte Proliferation is Attenuated by the Intracellular Fas Ligand Domain The results demonstrate that Fas ligand intracellular domain signaling impairs activation-induced proliferation in B and T cells by diminishing phosphorylation of PLCgamma, PKC and ERK1/2. [Blood] Human Effector CD8+ T Cells Derived from Naïve Rather than Memory Subsets Possess Superior Traits for Adoptive Immunotherapy Researchers investigated human CD8+ T cells and found that naïve cells were not only the most abundant subset, but also the most capable of in vitro expansion and of T cell receptor transgene expression. [Blood] Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide Loss Leads to Impaired CNS Parenchymal T Cell Infiltration and Resistance to Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis The results indicate that vasoactive intestinal peptide plays an unanticipated permissive and/or proinflammatory role in the propagation of the inflammatory response in the CNS, a finding with potential therapeutic relevance in autoimmune neuroinflammatory diseases such as multiple sclerosis. [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA] Convergent Recombination Shapes the Clonotypic Landscape of the Naïve T Cell Repertoire Here, researchers tested the key predictions of convergent recombination in a comprehensive evaluation of the naïve CD8+ T cell receptor-beta repertoire in mice. [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA] Cytokine-Dependent but Acquired Immunity-Independent Arthritis Caused by DNA Escaped from Degradation Here, researchers showed that when bone marrow cells from the DNase II-deficient mice were transferred to the wild-type mice, they developed arthritis. [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA] IFN-Gamma Abrogates Endotoxin Tolerance by Facilitating Toll-Like Receptor-Induced Chromatin Remodeling The results identify a mechanism by which IFN-gamma promotes activation of macrophages and highlight the importance of chromatin remodeling and transcriptional control in the regulation of inflammatory cytokine production in tolerant and activated macrophages. [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA] Umbilical Cord-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Modulate Monocyte Function to Suppress T Cell Proliferation In this paper, researchers report that suppression of mitogen-induced T cell proliferation by human umbilical cord-, bone marrow-, and cord blood-mesenchymal stromal cells required monocytes. [J Immunol] Haptoglobin as an Early Serum Biomarker of Virus-Induced Autoimmune Type I Diabetes in Biobreeding Diabetes Resistant and LEW1.WR1 Rats In this study, researchers utilized two-dimensional gel analysis followed by matrix-assisted-laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry analysis to identify putative serum biomarkers for autoimmune type I diabetes in biobreeding diabetes resistant rats induced to express the disease.
