    TOP STORY
Scientists Reveal Dual Role for Key T Cell Factor
When fighting chronic viral infections or cancers, a key division of the immune system, known as CD8 T cells, sometimes loses its ability to effectively fight foreign invaders. Scientists report that the shift is masterminded in part by NFAT, short for nuclear factor of activated T cells, and best known for its crucial role in getting CD8 T cells battle-ready. PUBLICATIONS (Ranked by impact factor of the journal)
The Glia-Derived Alarmin IL-33 Orchestrates the Immune Response and Promotes Recovery following CNS Injury
Scientists identified the nuclear alarmin, interleukin (IL)-33, as an important regulator of the innate immune response after CNS injury. IL-33 is released immediately after CNS injury from damaged oligodendrocytes, acting on local astrocytes and microglia to induce chemokines critical for monocyte recruitment. [Neuron] Abstract | Press Release

Immature Myeloid Cells Directly Contribute to Skin Tumor Development by Recruiting IL-17-Producing CD4+ T Cells
To identify the direct role of CD33+S100A9+ cells in tumor development, investigators used S100A9 transgenic mice to create the conditions for topical accumulation of these cells in the skin in the absence of infection or tissue damage. [J Exp Med] Abstract | Press Release

Imaging Regulatory T Cell Dynamics and CTLA4-Mediated Suppression of T Cell Priming
Foxp3+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) are identified as two non-overlapping populations in the T-zone and follicular regions of the lymph node. In the T-zone, Tregs migrate more rapidly than conventional T cells (Tconv), extend longer processes and interact with resident dendritic cells and Tconv. [Nat Commun] Abstract

Suppression of Systemic Autoimmunity by the Innate Immune Adaptor STING
Investigators report that stimulator of interferon genes (STING) potently suppresses inflammation in a model of systemic lupus erythematosus. STING-deficient macrophages failed to express negative regulators of immune activation and thus were hyperresponsive to TLR ligands, producing abnormally high levels of proinflammatory cytokines. [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA] Abstract

PTEN Regulates Natural Killer Cell Trafficking In Vivo
Scientists used a natural killer (NK) cell-specific phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN)-deletion mouse model to define the ramifications of intrinsic NK cell PTEN loss in vivo. They investigated the ability of PTEN-deficient NK cells to traffic to a site of tumor challenge. [Proc Natl Acad Sci USA] Abstract

Heme Oxygenase-1 Regulates Myeloid Cell Trafficking in AKI
Researchers investigated whether heme oxygenase-1 expression, which is protective in ischemia-reperfusion injury, regulates trafficking of myeloid-derived immune cells in the kidney. [J Am Soc Nephrol]
    Abstract | Press Release

Immunomodulation of Selective Naive T Cell Functions by p110δ Inactivation Improves the Outcome of Mismatched Cell Transplantation
In a mouse model of fully mismatched hematopoietic cell transplantation, scientists show that genetic inactivation of p110δ in T cells leads to milder graft versus host disease, whereas graft versus leukemia is preserved. [Cell Rep] Full Article | Graphical Abstract

Subdominant H60 Antigen-Specific CD8 T-Cell Response Precedes Dominant H4 Antigen-Specific Response during the Initial Phase of Allogenic Skin Graft Rejection
To understand the mechanism underlying the subdominance of H60 during allogeneic skin transplantation, scientists investigated the dynamics of the H60-specific CD8 T cells in B6 mice transplanted with allogeneic BALB.B tail skin. [Exp Mol Med] Full Article

Potential Effector and Immunoregulatory Functions of Mast Cells in Mucosal Immunity
Investigators discuss evidence suggesting that mast cells can perform diverse effector and immunoregulatory roles that contribute to homeostasis or pathology in mucosal tissues. [Mucosal Immunol] Abstract

Understanding of Molecular Mechanisms in Natural Killer Cell Therapy
Although immune cells can suppress cancer cell growth, cancer cells can evade immune cell attack via immune escape mechanisms. The authors discuss the overall procedures and strategies of NK cell therapy against cancer. [Exp Mol Med] Full Article
