TOP STORYIgG3 Regulates Tissue-Like Memory B Cells in HIV-Infected Individuals Investigators describe a regulatory role for immunoglobulin G3 (IgG3) in dampening the immune system-activating effects of chronic HIV viremia on B cells. Secreted IgG3 was bound to IgM-expressing B cells in vivo in HIV-infected chronically viremic individuals but not in early-viremic or aviremic individuals. [Nat Immunol] Abstract | |

PUBLICATIONS(Ranked by impact factor of the journal)Scientists identified a CD19+B220− B cell subset that is induced by PI3Kδ signaling, resides in the lungs, and is correlated with increased susceptibility to S. pneumoniae during early phases of infection via an antibody-independent mechanism. [Nat Commun] Full Article Antibody-Dependent Enhancement of Ebola Virus Infection by Human Antibodies Isolated from Survivors A panel of monoclonal antibodies obtained from human survivors of filovirus infection caused by Ebola, Bundibugyo, or Marburg viruses was evaluated for their ability to facilitate antibody-dependent enhancement. [Cell Rep] Full Article | Graphical Abstract Epstein-Barr Virus Type-2 Infects T-Cells and Induces B-Cell Lymphomagenesis in Humanized Mice Infection of humanized mice with Epstein Barr virus (EBV)-2 led to infection of both T- and B-cells, unlike infection with EBV-1, in which only B-cells were infected. Gene expression analysis demonstrated that EBV-2 established a latency III infection with evidence of ongoing viral reactivation in both B- and T-cells. [J Virol] Abstract Researchers studied immune activation in response to arenavirus infection during cholestasis using bile duct ligation. They monitored T cell responses, virus load and liver pathology markers after infection with lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus. [Sci Rep] Full Article Human CD8 T Cell Activation in Acute and Chronic Chikungunya Infection The authors demonstrated that CD8+ T cells expressed higher ex vivo Granzyme B, Perforin and CD107A expression in patients in the acute phase of CHIKD compared with healthy individuals and higher ex vivo expression of CD69, IL17A, IL10, CD95L and coexpression of CD95/CD95L. [Immunology] Abstract The susceptibility of human lymphocytes to infection was assessed. The presence of monocytes-macrophages was required to attain infection of both resting and proliferating lymphocytes. [Viruses] Full Article Vivax Infection Alters Peripheral B Cell Profile and Induces Persistent Serum IgM Researchers analyzed peripheral B cell profiles and antibody responses during acute Plasmodium vivax infection and upon recovery in a low-transmission area in India. [Parasite Immunol] Abstract The authors explored the impact of repeated annual vaccination with the same vaccine strain (H1N1pdm09) over multiple seasons in the post-2009 pandemic era and showed that repeated vaccination increased both T-cell and humoral responses. REVIEWSThe Role of Mononuclear Phagocytes in Ebola Virus Infection The filovirus, Zaire Ebolavirus, infects tissue macrophages and dendritic cells early during infection. Viral infection of both cells types is highly productive, leading to increased viral load. However, virus infection of these two cell types results in different consequences for cellular function. POLICY NEWSHow Unpaywall Is Transforming Open Science Unpaywall has become indispensable to many academics, and tie-ins with established scientific search engines could broaden its reach. On 26 July, Elsevier announced plans to integrate Unpaywall into its Scopus database searches, allowing it to deliver millions more free-to-read papers to users than it does currently. [Nature News] Editorial Iranian Students Protest US Visa Slowdown The rate at which the US government grants visas to prospective students from Iran has declined dramatically during President Donald Trump’s time in office, according to US government data. And the visas that are granted take more time to arrive, according to a group of Iranian students that is petitioning the Trump administration to speed up the process. [Nature News] Editorial Hundreds of Researchers from Harvard, Yale and Stanford Were Published in Fake Academic Journals In the so-called “post-truth era”, science seems like one of the last bastions of objective knowledge, but what if science itself were to succumb to fake news? Over the past year, German journalist Svea Eckert and a small team of journalists went undercover to investigate a massive underground network of fake science journals and conferences.
