TOP STORYPeli1 Facilitates Virus Replication and Promotes Neuroinflammation during West Nile Virus Infection Researchers report that mice deficient in pellino 1 (Peli1) were more resistant to lethal West Nile virus infection and exhibited reduced viral loads in tissues and attenuated brain inflammation. Peli1 mediated chemokine and proinflammatory cytokine production in microglia and promoted T cell and macrophage infiltration into the CNS. [J Clin Invest] Full Article | |

PUBLICATIONS(Ranked by impact factor of the journal)Plasmodium Co-Infection Protects against Chikungunya Virus-Induced Pathologies Investigators showed that prior exposure to Plasmodium suppressed chikungunya virus (CHIKV)-associated pathologies in mice. Mechanistically, Plasmodium infection induced IFNγ, which reduced viremia of a subsequent CHIKV infection and suppressed tissue viral load and joint inflammation. [Nat Commun] Full Article Researchers demonstrated that, relative to single virus exposure, repeated antigen exposure dramatically altered the dynamics of influenza-specific lung lung-resident primary memory CD8+ T cell populations. [Cell Rep] Full Article | Graphical Abstract The authors showed that circulating natural regulatory T (Treg) cells in adults with pulmonary tuberculosis preserved their suppressive potential but T effector cells from such subjects were resistant to Treg-mediated suppression. [PLoS Pathog] Full Article Researchers showed that respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) induced the classical ROS-dependent NETosis in human neutrophils and that RSV was trapped in DNA lattices coated with NE and MPO. [Sci Rep] Full Article Scientists report that short-term stimulation of primary human monocyte-derived macrophages with interferon-γ and tumor necrosis factor-α, i.e. M1 polarization, led to a significant containment of virus replication. [Sci Rep] Full Article Recombinant Rv2346c protein was synthesized and used to treat Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG)-infected macrophages. The authors showed that Rv2346c inhibited the proliferation of BCG-infected macrophages and enhanced the survival of BCG in macrophages. [Emerg Microbes Infect] Full Article Human Interleukin-34-Derived Macrophages Have Increased Resistant to HIV-1 Infection Investigators report that macrophages (Mϕs) differentiated from human peripheral blood monocytes with interleukin-34 were substantially more resistant to HIV-1 infection than macrophage colony-stimulating factor-derived Mϕs. [Cytokine] Abstract Enhancing FcγR-Mediated Antibody Effector Function during Persistent Viral Infection Scientists dissected the mechanisms by which two depleting antibodies overcame the obstacle of endogenous immune complexes and achieved efficient target cell depletion in persistently infected mice. Efficient antibody-mediated depletion during persistent lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus infection required increased levels of antibody bound to target cells or use of afucosylated antibodies with increased affinity for FcγRs. REVIEWSCell and Animal Models for Studying Hepatitis B Virus Infection and Drug Development Many cell culture and animal models have been used to study hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication and its effects in the liver; these have facilitated development of strategies to control and clear chronic HBV infection. Investigators discuss the advantages and limitations of systems for studying HBV and developing antiviral agents, along with recent advances. [Gastroenterology] Abstract The Induction and Consequences of Influenza A Virus-Induced Cell Death The authors review the current understanding of Influenza A virus (IAV)-induced cell death and critically evaluate the consequences of cell death in aiding either the restoration of lung homoeostasis or the progression of IAV-induced lung pathologies. POLICY NEWSScience Learns from Its Mistakes Too Scientific studies should always be published irrespective of their result. That is one of the conclusions of a research project conducted by the German Centre for the Protection of Laboratory Animals at the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, the results of which have now been published in the journal PLOS ONE. [EurekAlert!] Editorial Six Months to Brexit: How Scientists Are Preparing for the Split The incredible is fast becoming the inevitable. Just six months from now, unless a political earthquake intervenes, the United Kingdom must leave the European Union. Yet the details of the March 2019 break-up are still muddy, and scientists are growing increasingly anxious — and angry — about how Brexit will alter their research and their lives. [Nature News] Editorial Trump Administration Launches Review of Scientific Research Involving Fetal Tissue The Trump administration has launched a comprehensive review of all research that involves fetal tissue, reopening an issue that has galvanized anti-abortion activists but worried scientists who fear their work could be under threat. [STAT News] Editorial Researchers Take Action to End Airlines’ Restrictions on Lab Animals In a recently filed complaint to the US Department of Transportation, the National Association for Biomedical Research accuses four major airlines of illegally discriminating against customers wishing to fly animals destined for the lab.
