TOP STORYInvestigators examined induction and maintenance of immune memory following single- vs 2-dose inactivated poliovirus vaccine schedules, either full-dose intramuscular or fractional-dose intradermal, in rhesus macaques. Humoral responses, bone marrow-homing antibody-secreting plasma cells, and blood-circulating/lymph node-homing memory B cells were examined longitudinally. [Clin Infect Dis] Full Article | |

PUBLICATIONS(Ranked by impact factor of the journal)Plasmodium-Specific Atypical Memory B Cells Are Short-Lived Activated B Cells In combination with a mosquito-initiated P. chabaudi infection, scientists showed that Plasmodium-specific atypical memory B cells are short-lived and disappear upon natural resolution of chronic infection. [eLife] Abstract Researchers showed that glucuronoxylomanogalactan (GalXM) was a potent activator of murine dendritic cells, and when co-cultured with T cells, induced a Th17 cytokine response. They also demonstrated that treating mice with GalXM prior to infection with C. neoformans protected them from infection, and this phenomenon was dependent on IL-6 and IL-17. [Sci Rep] Full Article Investigators showed that Vδ1+ cells, a subset of γδ T cells described as being important in intestinal barrier function, increase in frequency in HIV-infected individuals, including HIV controllers. [Sci Rep] Full Article Monocyte-derived dendritic cells (moDCs) were permissive to Kyasanur Forest disease virus (KFDV) infection, leading to increased release of IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α. Supernatants from KFDV-infected moDCs caused endothelial cell activation, as measured by leukocyte adhesion. [Emerg Microbes Infect] Full Article Scientists demonstrated that a TLR2 ligand-based adjuvant, meningococcal PorB, has broad immunostimulatory activity with the ability to induce a robust and diverse vaccine antigen specific T cell response. [Vaccine] Abstract Researchers evaluated the vaccinal immune response of vaccines formulated with the recombinant Bovine herpesvirus 5 glycoprotein D in bovines. [Vaccine] Abstract The authors analyzed the expression level of miR-20b-5p in macrophage responses to M. tuberculosis (Mtb) infection and exosomes derived from macrophages after Mtb infection. miR-20b-5p mimics and inhibitor were, respectively, transfected to evaluate the effect of miR-20b-5p on Mtb and macrophages. [J Cell Biochem] Abstract Researchers investigated whether two M. tuberculosis virulence factors are able to induce distinguishable bioenergetics traits in human monocyte-derived macrophages. INDUSTRY NEWSEnesi Pharma and Sementis announced they have entered into a collaborative agreement. The collaboration is focused on the development and evaluation of solid dose versions of Sementis’ lead peanut hypoallergy vaccine and their single vectored chikungunya/Zika vaccine candidates for administration via Enesi Pharma’s ImplaVax® technology. [Enesi Pharma] Press Release BioNTech AG and the University of Pennsylvania announced that they have entered into a strategic research collaboration. [BioNTech AG] Press Release David Dodd, GeoVax President & CEO, commented, “This study highlights the importance of a vaccine solution for Zika. Our vaccine candidate, GEO-ZM02, has demonstrated 100% single-dose protection in mice against a lethal dose of Zika virus, and is progressing to studies in non-human primates with funding from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health”. POLICY NEWSSome Takeaways for Science from Yesterday’s U.S. Elections For scientists, the new Democratic majority in the U.S. House of Representatives isn’t the only important result from the midterm election. Four House incumbents active on science issues have been defeated, and a fifth is trailing. [ScienceInsider] Editorial Europe’s Researchers Benefit From Reduced Bureaucracy The European Union has made good on its promise to reduce the amount of red tape that scientists must wade through when applying for grants from its flagship funding program, according to a report released by the European Court of Auditors. [Nature News] Editorial Wellcome and Gates Join Bold European Open-Access Plan Two of the world’s largest biomedical research funders have backed a plan to make all papers resulting from work they fund open access on publication by 2020. On 5 November, the London-based Wellcome Trust and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in Seattle, Washington, announced they were both endorsing ‘Plan S’, adding their weight to an initiative already backed by 13 research funders across Europe since its launch in September.
