Krt19+/Lgr5 Cells Are Radioresistant Cancer-Initiating Stem Cells in the Colon and Intestine
Researchers demonstrated that the intermediate filament keratin-19 (Krt19) marks long-lived, radiation-resistant cells above the crypt base that generate Lgr5+ crypt-based columnar in the colon and intestine. In colorectal cancer models, Krt19+ cancer-initiating cells are also radioresistant, while Lgr5+ stem cells are radiosensitive. [Cell Stem Cell] Abstract | Graphical Abstract

Selenoprotein P Influences Colitis-Induced Tumorigenesis by Mediating Stemness and Oxidative Damage
Using intestinal organoid cultures, investigators found that, compared with those from wild-type animals, selenoprotein P-null cultures displayed increased stem cell characteristics that are coupled with increased ROS production, DNA damage, proliferation, decreased cell survival, and modulation of WNT signaling in response to H2O2-mediated oxidative stress. Upregulation of ATG3 Contributes to Autophagy Induced by the Detachment of Intestinal Epithelial Cells from the Extracellular Matrix, but Promotes Autophagy-Independent Apoptosis of the Attached Cells
In an effort to identify the mechanisms of detachment-induced autophagy and growth arrest of non-malignant cells, researchers found that detachment of these cells caused upregulation of ATG3 and that ATG3 upregulation contributed to autophagy and growth arrest of detached cells. [Autophagy] Abstract

Anti-G-CSF Treatment Induces Protective Tumor Immunity in Mouse Colon Cancer by Promoting Protective NK Cell, Macrophage and T Cell Responses
Investigators investigated the effects of therapeutic anti-granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) treatment on colorectal cancer growth and anti-tumor immune responses. [Oncotarget] Abstract

MiR-320e Is a Novel Prognostic Biomarker in Colorectal Cancer
Researchers conducted a systematic discovery and validation of microRNA biomarkers in two clinical trial cohorts of colorectal cancer patients. [Br J Cancer] Abstract

Activation of AMPK by Chitosan Oligosaccharide in Intestinal Epithelial Cells: Mechanism of Action and Potential Applications in Intestinal Disorders
The authors investigated the effect of chitosan oligosaccharide on AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) in intestinal epithelial cells and its potential applications in the intestinal diseases benefited from AMPK activation. [Biochem Pharmacol] Abstract

Polyelectrolyte Complex Containing Silver Nanoparticles with Antitumor Property on Caco-2 Colon Cancer Cells
Polyelectrolyte complex (beads) based on N,N,N-trimethyl chitosan/alginate and silver nanoparticles were loaded within beads. In vitro cytotoxicity assays using beads/silver nanoparticles indicated that this material significantly inhibited the growth of colon cancer cells [Int J Biol Macromol] Abstract

Mechanisms Underlying 3-Bromopyruvate-Induced Cell Death in Colon Cancer
The authors indicated that 3-bromopyruvate can suppress tumor growth and induce cell death by multiple mechanisms at the same time and concentration in different types of colon cancer cell by depleting cellular energy stores. [J Bioenerg Biomembr] Full Article

MicroRNA-429 Inhibits the Migration and Invasion of Colon Cancer Cells by Targeting PAK6/Cofilin Signaling
Scientists investigated the role of microRNA-429 (miR-429) in the regulation of migration and invasion of colon cancer cells using RT-qPCR and western blotting. They showed that the expression of miR-429 was reduced in colon cancer cell lines, when compared to a normal colon epithelial cell line. [Oncol Rep] Abstract

Ribosome Biogenesis Dysfunction Leads to p53-Mediated Apoptosis and Goblet Cell Differentiation of Mouse Intestinal Stem/Progenitor Cells
Scientists adopted a genetic approach to investigate the role of Notchless, an essential actor of ribosome biogenesis, in the adult mouse intestinal lineage. [Cell Death Dis] Abstract
